Summary: A wedding is a perfect time to realize one's feelings. Or, Joseph works up the courage to ask Emerson to dance.
Word count: 1095
“Now that’s what I call growth,” Meg Riley lifted her glass of champagne towards the dance floor. Emerson was dancing with Erica, huge happy smile on his face. They were doing some sort of drunken rendition of a swing dance, badly, and without a care in the world.
“Never thought I’d see the day that Finley could actually make her his wife without Em kicking and screaming the entire time down the aisle,” she hummed, amused.
“It is nice to see,” Ed Buchan nodded along, taking a sip of his own champagne, “I am glad they could move past that. Mansell genuinely seems to make her happy. Shockingly.”
“And it’s nice to see Em so happy too,” Riley said, smiling as Emerson dipped his sister on the dance floor. Mansell cut in, with a tap to Emerson’s shoulder and Emerson gave him a hug before passing Erica off to him. He wiped his brow with the back of his hand and bounded over to their table, face-splitting smile still on his face.
“Isn’t this great, you guys?” He asked, grabbing his previously abandoned champagne glass and taking a swig, “Wedding of the century right here.”
Riley reached over and patted his arm, “I think we’re all just glad you and Mansell both got through the day without any black eyes or bloodied noses.”
Emerson made a scoffing sound as if he had no idea what she was talking about, as if he and Mansell hadn’t just barely come to blows mere weeks ago.
“He makes her happy,” he said with a shrug, “Isn’t that all that matters at the end of the day?”
“How big of you, Kent,” Ed nodded sagely.
“Well,” Emerson smirked, running his tongue along the top of his teeth, “I’m still not above burying his arse in the ground if he ever does anything to hurt her. With our line of work, I know the ins and outs enough to think he can disappear without a trace.”
“I can’t hear that,” Joseph Chandler spoke up for the first time.
Emerson’s eyes flicked to his DI, smile somehow growing even bigger at DI Chandler’s own.
“I’m kidding,” he said pointedly, “But he still won’t be walking away from her broken heart without a broken nose, so he best behave himself.”
“I’m glad you’re having a good time,” Riley said, tugging on Emerson’s sleeve to pull him down into the empty chair beside her, “The wedding was lovely.”
“Yeah well, Mum and Dad went all out, huh? I think we all know this is the only wedding they’ll be planning so…”

Already I’m nearly finished my Whitechapel rewatch and I’m not happy - I’m not ready for it to end. And by end I mean be cancelled when they’re just getting into the grit of an arc so we’ll never know how it would have actually ended, what would have happened to every character, and what it means for good vs. evil.
