Appendix: Bill Mantlo

If you're a comic book fan, I truly hope you know the name Bill Mantlo. For one thing, he was the "Fill-in King". When Marvel started becoming notorious for late issues, they started a fill-in policy to address this and if you needed a quick and creative story to keep a deadline, Bill Mantlo was the guy to turn to. If it was a licensed property, no one wanted to touch it, just ask Larry Hama on how he got G.I. Joe. However, Bill Mantlo was out there pumping out Rom: Space Knight and the Micronauts (winner of 1979 Eagle Award for Favorite New Comic Title) as well as taking his turn on Tarzan, Human Fly, John Carter: Warlord of Mars, Man from Atlantis, Battlestar Galactica, Questprobe, Buckaroo Banzai, The Last Starfighter, Sectaurs, Red Sonja, and Savage Sword of Conan. If you're a fan of Rocket Raccoon or Cloak & Dagger or Swords of the Swashbucklers, he co-created them. Reference to Bruce Banner's troubled and abused childhood, that started with Mantlo. As well as fill-ins, he had runs on many titles including The Incredible Hulk, Peter Parker the Spectacular Spider-Man, and Iron Man. At the same time, he studied, earned his law license and was out there fighting for real people in real life as a Legal Aid Society public defender in the Bronx. All that changed when Bill was the victim of a hit-and-run accident while roller blading on July 17, 1992. The injuries were so severe that when he came out of the coma, he has had to have full time care at a health facility ever since. In 2014, Bill was awarded the Bill Finger award.

Marvel Comics: Captain America was published with a cover date of July 2000. The One-shot was "a comic book" made on Earth 616 (Earth-20007) and introduced Earth-72311. The issue was "supposedly" written by Rick Jones and pencilled by Steve Rogers. In the Marvels Comics version Captain America was secretly Roger Stephenson (introduced in this issue), Bucky was Rick Jones, but the Red Skull was still Johann Shmidt. Marvel: The Lost Generation 8 (5 of 12 as it was released in reverse order) was published with a cover date of July 2000. The issue introduced Agent Colby, created by Roger Stern and John Byrne. Besides the events on Earth-616, it was also a multiverse story that also took place in the 22nd Century on Earth-700's Moon's Tranquility City. The one-shot anthology Silver Age: 80-Page Giant was published with a cover date of July 2000. The cover price was listed as 250 c. It was part of a collection of silver age one-shots released that month. Besides original material it also included the reprinted story "Mad Hatter's Hat Crimes" and the story "The Invaders from Space?", which was originally meant for Superman's Pal, Jimmy Olsen 133. In the segment "S.O.S. Nowhere", JLA secret identites were revealed to the super villians. They sent their love ones to GorillaCity for safety and used Dial H to transform into new heroes; Superman/Doc Fission, Atom/Mod Man, Aquaman/Terra Firma, Batman/Minuteman/The Chief, Black Canary/Miss Fortune, Flash/Marionette, Green Arrow/Poltergeist, and Martian Manhunter/Go-Go (named after the dance). That segment also introduced the Orange, Blue, and Red Lantern Rings. Akira was released in Japan on July 16, 1988 (and first shown on December 25, 1989 in the US). Writer and director Katsuhiro Otomo adapted his own cyberpunk Manga serial (which was still in production and not yet completed in its run in Young Magazine) and set a new standard for anime. The production created more pictures for frames and used more colors than any previous animated film as well as record production cost. The movie has often been credited for being one of the first animes to become popular in the West. It has been one of the few animated films to recieve a Criterion Collection release. The music and voices were recorded before the animation began. The film took place in 1988 (the destruction of Tokyo) and 2019, where a teen biker gang got caught between a secret military ESP program and a rebel group. The character that changed the most from the manga to the anime was probably Kaori. Kaneda's cycle slide skid has become iconic and been homaged in many mediums, especially in animation. On July 16, 1988, an ESPer known as Akira, lost control of his power and ended up destroying Tokyo. The government covered this up by claiming it was a nuclear explosion. It did in fact lead to the beginning of World War III. (Akira, film version)

On July 16, 1955, the first installment of the second Comando Cody serial was released. "Comando Cody: Sky Marshal of the Universe" started out life meant to be a TV series, but was then changed to a movie serial. Eventually, in 1955, it did end up being syndicated on NBC. George Wallace, who played the lead in the first serial "Comando Cody: Radar Men from the Moon" (1952), was replaced by Judd Holdren as Comando Cody. He had previously played the role that was meant to be Cody in "Zombies in the Startosphere" (1952), but for some reason, the character's name was changed to Larry Martin. It is said that the rocket packed Commander Cody in the Star Wars universe was a hat tip to the character by George Lucas who loved and based the movies on the old sci fi serials, particularly Flash Gordon. The anthology comic Detective Comics 293 was published with a cover date of July 1961. The issue marked the start of the run of Aquaman back up stories. Aquaman took the place of the Roy Raymond stories. The Batman story was a sci-fi story dealing with the extra-demensional species the Gruggs and the Yllans. The first season of Stranger Things (8 episodes) dropped on Netflix on July 15, 2016. The series that had the feel of Stephen King crossed with Steven Spielberg about a group of young teens facing a paranormal threat in the fall of 1983, became a huge hit for Netflix and an iconic show for the new mellinium. Matt Duffer and Ross Duffer wanted to direct the IT remake, when turned down, they made Stranger Things. Finn Wolfhard ended up being in both Stranger Things and IT/IT Chapter Two. The font for the title was meant as an homage to the font used for 80's Stephen King paperback titles. The character of Steve was changed and given a redemption arc due to the casting of Joe Keery. Shannon Purser's character Barb was a minor character but really struck a chord with the audience. The tags "ImWithBarb" and "JustforBarb" started trending on Twitter. Millie Bobby Brown, who played "El" or "Eleven", was actually 11 when she filmed the part. She also actually shaved her head for the role and was not just wearing a bald cap. She got her first kiss for the show to which she was reported to have responded, "That's kissing? That's it? That sucked!" Season one took place from November 6, 1983 through December 11, 1983.
