Since I was also the only one of us who knew the whole story, they were now all staring at me while I tried to catch my breath. Hardison at least was nice enough to step in and explain part of it. He was starting to grow on me.
Unfortunately, his explanation started with, "Well, after Amy ditched you at the barfight, your dad here showed up and -- "
"My what?" Parker shrilled high enough that I frantically gestured for her to lower the volume so none of the super-sensory muscle looking for us would hear her. "Amy did what?" she added in a stage whisper. She glanced between me and Amy but then returned her glower to Hardison, who looked like a deer in headlights. He raised his hands in innocence.
"Hey, messenger, shooting, do not!" Hardison sputtered. Fortunately by this time I was able to jump in and cut him some slack. Only fair after his valiant effort to do the same for me.
"I'm not her father," I explained, which I thought even the kids should have figured out I was lying about by now, but apparently they hadn’t, based on Amy's gasp and Hardison's exaggerated look of shocked betrayal.
"You're a Watcher," said Eliot, speaking for the first time since he had yelled at us to get out of the dungeons. I hadn't even realized he was joining the conversation, he had only just turned around and sat facing me, back against the concrete guardthingy. "That's right, isn't it? You're here to collect the new Slayer and bring her into the fold so you guys can keep an eye on her."
