It bothers me how when I tell a story about someone doing something that wasn’t nice, they respond differently if I specify that it was my family member who did it.

For instance, if I talk about how my Uncle Harold spilled a drink on my shirt and laughed in my face about it, people chuckle and say “That’s how uncles are!” Then recount how their uncle did something once.

But if I tell the same story, but don’t say that it was my uncle, suddenly this behavior isn’t ok. When did we collectively decide that it was ok if your family treated you badly? Like it is allowed to behave like a jerk as long as you share the same DNA?
