This is exactly what i interpreted. It’s actually a tragic love song about being in love from the outside and coming in 2nd to everyone she chooses . He’s in the backseat judging as she goes on picking all these guys that he knows won’t mean as much to her as he does. He’s not devout of any appetite meaning , he still has that hunger , still wanting her and won’t tell her “no” and perhaps he’s used to this repetitive cycle with them “going round and round each time”. He knows he can’t fully commit bc he admits it with “ Just for tonight, let's go hangover chasing and I'll talk your ear off about why it's safe as I fumble my words and fall flat on my face through the truth”. He already knows this is in the moment kinda thing so it isn’t going to last , So if that’s the only way he can have her, then he’ll take it for what it is. They’re both acting on impulse, giving in to their lust or desire of each other knowing there may be consequences leading to broken hearts. Also, the fact he wrote it during December , knowing it’s Haylor month , Taylor’s favorite time of the year and her birthday all sum it up as they are pretty much stuck in time. It’s very much a Wuthering Heights type of song imo. A beautiful, tragic love song just as they write about each other every time.
