I saw a pamphlet lying around a coffee shop that mentioned this group, Take Back Cheapside. Then I saw a poster at Starbucks. I thought I might as well look up the website to figure out what it’s about. Looks like this has to do with Confederate monuments in a place downtown named Cheapside. This reminds me of the recent events in Charlottesville. I read about Charlottesville in the news and talked about it with my friends and family. If something similar is going on here in Lexington, I want to find out! Maybe I should look into the website a little more--or even go downtown to see what Cheapside is.

Look at all of this litter! I find trash, especially cups and bottles, lying around campus everywhere all the time. Seeing litter around campus makes it easy to feel like fellow students don’t value the campus grounds. Surely there are some recycling initiatives or waste programs or sustainability groups here on campus. I should look into that.

I walked past this sign on the way to class today. It’s in front of the Margaret L. King Library, which is right next to Maxwell House. The sign advertises an exhibit, “Kentucky in Bloom,” at the library. I’d love to learn about wildlife and culture in Kentucky. I’m also curious about this library--what kind of books does it have? Can it be useful to me for my studies? Who is Margaret King? It’s occurred to me that most buildings are named after men, so Margaret must  be pretty special.

Hello, everyone!

This is the introductory text for my “sample blog” for our class. I can’t promise that I’ll keep this blog up as strictly as each of you, but I will post some sample posts in hopes that it will help you write your own. Each week, you need to post at least 5 posts by Saturday at 5 PM. These posts can be photos or short videos you shoot yourself; articles that you find online about UK or Lexington communities; audio recordings; original pieces of writing, or something else entirely. I’ll make specific prompts each week that your posts should follow (look on Canvas for these prompts).  The first week, I ask that you start with an introductory post. What are your hobbies? Interests? What do you normally research online or in the world around you? Have you kept blogs before? Do you write regularly? Are you excited to start this semester? Just introduce yourself. I look forward to an insightful, exciting, and interesting semester of blogging!
