Locals tell us that the abandoned “old jail” in San Augustine, Texas, hasn’t been used for a jail for about a hundred years. Since then, at one time, it was used as a architect’s office. Now, it looks like it’s mostly used for storing furniture, golf clubs, and some other items.

José María Velasco Gómez (1840-1912) "Patio del ex convento de San Augusín" (1861) Gómez was one of the most popular artists of his time and internationally renowned. He received many distinctions such as the gold medal of the Mexican National Expositions of Bellas Artes in 1874 and 1876; the gold medal of the Philadelphia International Exposition in 1876, on the centenary of U.S. independence; and the medal of the Paris Universal Exposition in 1889.
