World-renowned ice fishing festival kicks off in Hwacheon http://dlvr.it/TQHxn9
The calendar marks the 15th of January 2017, the second day of the Hwacheon Sancheoneo festival. One week postponed due to warm weather, the festival is now in full swing. The frozen ice welcomes tourists from all over Korea and all over the world, but mainly Asia.
After about an hour wait to enter the fishing area designated for foreigners only, we got our chance to be fishermen for the day. With holes in the ice every 20 meters or so, the foreigners are spread out over the sheet of ice, all patiently waiting to get a fish on their line. We weren’t so lucky at first, with no fish caught in the first half hour. Eventually with the addition of more fish in the water, we easily caught up with the others who had caught at least three each. So after standing on the frozen ice it was time to eat!!
The Hwacheon Sancheoneo Ice Festival was a blast this weekend! I do enjoy being in a large metropolitan city like Seoul (the biggest city I've ever lived in so far), but once in a while it's nice to get out of the city and see the country side.
I still can't get over the fact that this festival is 23 days long and has been going on for almost 15 years. There is tons to do that my friends and I couldn't cover all of it in 2 days.
Here are some of the things my friends and I did at this festival:
Ice climbing
Ice Fishing
Zip-lining
Ice sculpture display
Ice rafting
ATVs on ice
Here's a quick video recap of the festival via GoPro -
