Russia Expands Parallel Imports to Keep Consumer Market Supplied
In July 2022, Russian authorities widened the list of products eligible for parallel imports, enabling companies to import branded goods without authorization from original manufacturers. The policy was designed to keep store shelves stocked after many Western companies suspended or exited operations in Russia.
Officials said the measure would help stabilize prices and maintain access to consumer electronics, household appliances, car parts, and industrial equipment. By legalizing parallel imports, the government aimed to reduce supply disruptions and limit inflationary pressure.
Critics warned that the approach could lead to quality-control issues and legal disputes over intellectual property. Supporters, however, argued that the policy was a practical response to extraordinary economic conditions and helped businesses adapt to new trade realities.
The expansion of parallel imports underscored Russia’s broader strategy of reorienting trade flows and reducing dependence on traditional Western suppliers.
