Actress, dancer, and stuntwoman Sandra Gimpel as the salt vampire from The Man Trap, the first Star Trek episode broadcast on Spetember 8 (september 6 in Canada), 1966.

Gimpel also played a Talosian in The Cage, the rejected first pilot episode for Star Trek.

This time we're looking at publicity photos from "The Man Trap" with Sandra Gimpel in and out of her costume. Ms. Gimpel was originally a dancer who learned to perform stunt work and had already been on the first Star Trek pilot "The Cage" as one of the Talosians in the background. One last round of publicity photos from "The Man Trap" on Sunday.

Almost all of us realize that the M-113 Creature (AKA the Salt Vampire) suit was worn by stunt performer Sandra Gimpel and that she also played one of the Talosians in the first Star Trek pilot, “The Cage.” According to an interview with the website Star Trek titled “Catching Up With The Salt Vampire, Sandra Gimpel”, she also was a background extra in several other TOS episodes. Up until this point, she had been a dancer and had performed with Elvis Presley in fifteen films. What many may not know, however, is her first stunt job was on Lost In Space. According to the same interview, the show’s stunt coordinator, Paul Strader, called her and said if she could hit the gym several times a week, he would show her the ropes of doing stunt work and she could do be Bill Mumy’s stunt double. She accepted and stayed with the show for its last two seasons. After that, she continued working in the stunt industry for many years, as well as working as a stunt coordinator, a second unit director, and an actress. Ms. Gimpel still enjoys doing the convention circuit to this day.

How well do you know your Talosians? And which Star Trek series does it really belong to? Because if you look at the trading card with Sandy Gimpel’s autograph, two errors - one a rather glaring one - should stand out.  First, the Talosians appeared in the episode “The Cage,” which was an episode of the Original Series and NOT The Next Generation. And, the second Talosian was played by Serena Sande, not Sandra Gimpel.  Memory Alpha seems to think the Talosian in the third photo (which it identifies as Talosian Observer #4) is Sandy Gimpel. That was the one who appeared in the elevator.
