Almost all of us realize that the M-113 Creature (AKA the Salt Vampire) suit was worn by stunt performer Sandra Gimpel and that she also played one of the Talosians in the first Star Trek pilot, “The Cage.” According to an interview with the website Star Trek titled “Catching Up With The Salt Vampire, Sandra Gimpel”, she also was a background extra in several other TOS episodes. Up until this point, she had been a dancer and had performed with Elvis Presley in fifteen films.
What many may not know, however, is her first stunt job was on Lost In Space. According to the same interview, the show’s stunt coordinator, Paul Strader, called her and said if she could hit the gym several times a week, he would show her the ropes of doing stunt work and she could do be Bill Mumy’s stunt double. She accepted and stayed with the show for its last two seasons. After that, she continued working in the stunt industry for many years, as well as working as a stunt coordinator, a second unit director, and an actress. Ms. Gimpel still enjoys doing the convention circuit to this day.
