Sandstone falls At this spot, the New River in West Virginia drops over a wide set of 5-10 meter high cliffs. The overlying rocks, a weaker and more easily eroded conglomerate, give way to more resistant and harder to erode outcrops of Carboniferous-aged sandstone, which stand high and give the high ridge. From here, the river shifts its shape, changing from a broad and flat feature upstream to confined in a narrow, V-shaped gorge downstream.
