Touro Law Students Help Superstorm Sandy Victims
Two years after Superstorm Sandy caused millions of dollars in damage to the northeastern United States, Touro Law Center staff and students participated in their first flood mediation in Brooklyn federal court for a victim of the storm. The students are volunteers with Touro Law’s Disaster Relief Clinic, which helps clients with storm-related issues, such as problems with real estate, public utilities, and FEMA claims. Observing mediations allows students to see attorneys in action and learn skills such as how to change strategies during a procedure and how to negotiate effectively. Touro Law Center is committed to social justice, and all law students are required to participate in externships or clinics. Benjamin Rajotte, director of the Disaster Relief Clinic, said that the clinic was a chance for the school to help people while giving law students a real-world education. One student who attended the mediation described it as “eye opening” and said that he learned a tremendous amount from the experience. Cynthia and Tom Rosicki, founding partners of Rosicki, Rosicki & Associates, P.C., support Touro Law Center and sponsor a scholarship for students with disabilities.
