the 100 mood boards ↠ grounder clans sangeda — desert clan
Character // murphy grounder verse
born to sangeda murphy grew up in one of the most developed sangeda villages, one where they lived in ruins rather than tents, holding the main port for one of the only desert trade routes. he grew up as a happy kid with a happy family, all of that went south when murphy got sick, he was sick for days before his father went out and tried to steal medicine to help him, after being caught he was stoned to death with his wife and son cast out in accordance to his clans laws. before leaving murphy set fire to the house of the man who caught his father stealing, he lived in ruins so the cement didn’t burn but his belongings, bed and the man did. murphy went from a twelve year old who had been banished to a murderer who anyone from that village knew to kill on sight.
at first murphy stayed with his mother in a tent just outside sangeda territory, the dead zone wasn’t safe but with his mother’s drinking she was in no condition to travel. murphy would be the one to go on supply runs, he’d usually return to find his mother passed out with vomit in the hair. when she died he originally thought she had just passed out again. after that he left the dead zone himself moving from cave to cave, it sucked but not as much as the dead zone.
Clan Building // dessert city , lavega
named for las vegas, lavega was where a grounder went to drink, gamble, get high and do whatever else. while located in sangeda territory lavega was filled with clansmen from all over with a heavy nomad population. with the population ever changing it is at any given time higher than the sangeda capital itself. the whole city is overcrowded having to push through crowds of grounders anywhere you go.
lavega itself is a mostly outdoor city with more to do than most people manage to get through in their usually short visits. few people actually live there full time but there are plenty of ruins and tents to stay in for a few nights, free of charge if you can find a place to sleep but it’s not by any means safe and you won’t often wake up with all your possessions still with you. there’s no law against stealing but there’s no law against murder either so it’s ill advised to make enemies. keeping to yourself is the best way to not be bothered but the longer you stay the more you push your luck.
traveling merchants , they’ll come and go within a few days to trade before leaving again. the area where merchants set up shop is one of the busiest in the city so the crime rate against merchants is relatively low. it helps that prices are lower than other markets because they have to compete with the prices of all the other shops and they sell so much in a day that they make quite the profit either way. that said they’re notorious for ripping off tourists who aren’t expecting the change in price from what they are accustomed to. different merchants are constantly switching off so everyday you can find something different to trade for.
entertainment , most entertainment in lavega relates directly to sangeda above any other clan for obvious reasons. games and competition is the most common form of pass time in lavega, it’s hard to find someone in lavega who hasn’t participated in knife or dart throwing competitions as they’re the most popular. winning is mostly bragging rights but people will bet things or favours when competitions get heated. there is also a so called fight circle, with the crowd making up the walls to the arena slaves and prisoners and anyone else who for whatever reason is in the possession of another person will be pinned against another and forced to fight to the death for the entertainment of those sick enough to watch. sometimes warriors will participate on their own word but it’s not a common thing to do.
other , alcohol and drug use is incredibly common among them but since neither is made in the area they’re the most commonly traded or gambled items. lavega is also a major trading point for the trading of slaves, most often frikdreina since you’d be likely to run into a friend of a war prisoner with all the different clansmen who visit lavega.
World Building // hydra station
hydra station survives the landing but didn’t land to close to the other stations, they landed in the dead zone just outside sangeda territory. being the arks main water production centre they became almost an oasis in the desert. the water is all in the middle with the space station surrounding what’s almost become a lake.
they survived the grounders easily since no sangeda people bothered leaving their territory to check it out, mostly because of how many sky people their were and because sangeda has a reputation for having the smallest army among the clans. eventually sangeda and skaikru talk out an agreement, trading water for food and other supplies. their only real problems came from nomadic grounders but their weren’t many of them considering they travel alone or in very small families.
Hydra Station // camp
Character // malachi
malachi, better known as sheidheda, (the dark commander) was the most feared commander to ever take the flame. he killed and ordered the deaths of more grounders than any other commander had. he even killed three flamekeepers, his fourth teacher, titus, killed him at just sixteen.
when the flamekeeper scouts went to search for another group of nightbloods to replace the last, malachi’s mother handed him over without any sadness, she was just hopeful for a sangeda commander.
training in polis malachi was always an angry child, most nightbloods were but he was impatient and couldn’t wait for his conclave. he was the only nightblood from his class who wasn’t upset by the death of the commander before him, instead he was almost excited. he became commander at eleven.
after taking the flame he became one of the most ruthless commanders to ever reign. he took land from other clans, particularly ones that shared borders with sangeda as he gave their land to his previous clan. while taking land he killed anyone who didn’t kneel before him.
he refused to listen to his flamekeepers or even the past commanders that lived in his head. he killed said flamekeepers for trying to control him. fair to say that coming from sangeda he was happy to have some power.
after his death he lived on through the flame just as the rest of the past commanders had. he constantly tried to influence the new commanders and more often than not did everything he could to convince them to kill their flamekeepers. from his experience flamekeepers were not around to help you lead but to control you and kill you when you didn’t do as they believed you should.

World Building // war
sangeda’s army is one of the weakest among the clans, this largely contributes to them living in the desert as it’s essentially where they’ve been allowed to live. they don’t have any major enemies since none of the other clans find it worth while to take land or anything else from them. this does however leave them with little to offer the other clans to trade with them so most sangeda people have only known their diet of insects and little water.
when they do go to war they use everyone they can, even those who aren’t trained completely or at all. they do have some allies so assisting them this is the most common reason for them to fight a war. for warpaint they don’t have a lot of options so they use muddy sand and put it on roughly with no real style in mind.
however just because their army is relatively weak that doesn’t mean they don’t have strong warriors, they just don’t have enough. they are quite impressive when it comes to throwing knifes and they fight with unbelievable aggression, they often kill with their bare hands. they’re also notorious for using poison, putting it in food, drinks, on knifes, darts, arrows, everything you could think of, they even have poisons that they’ve become immune to.
