Why are so many SAO fans not in fandom anymore? I think so many people are leaving and it makes me shy to start a blog if nobody will be here anymore. My favorite author left Tumblr and Twitter and Instagram and I think everyone is leaving SAO.

It's hard to say, but I have a few guesses:

1) Many people leave when anime isn't airing. Until the movie airs or the hopeful season 4 airs, it will be probably be more quiet between seasons.

2) The original web novel ended with War of Underworld. Fans who are very loyal to the web novel haven't been very pleased with the adaptations and consider season 3 to have been the end.

3) Similarly, quite a few people who are loyal light novel fans were not happy with the adaptations either.

Whatever the reasons, I am hoping the fandom doesn't completely die out. If we're lucky, it will be alive again in the fall when the movie comes out. I know I plan on sticking around to see how SAO plays out. It's my safe place and I couldn't bear to leave it.

Now that I think about it, if I’m even still technically part of the SAO fandom on tumblr other than being a shitposting Kirito that doesn’t roleplay seriously anymore, then I’m that one completely heterosexual person in the fandom who’s still such an old-fashioned southern redneck that he farms in old overhauls from 1962, regularly engages in hillbilly hand-fishing, keeps a Bible in every room, has an Eastern Band of Cherokee Indians flag and a rebel flag on the front porch of his cabin, has a Goldwater ‘64 sticker and a Wallace ‘68 sticker on his truck, and wouldn’t hesitate to fight a mother grizzly bear with a nothing but my great-great-great grandpa’s old tomahawk to protect quite literally any member of this fandom, even ones I don’t personally know, both because I love every one of you and because fighting a grizzly bear with a tomahawk would be a hell of a way to die. Mainly because I love you.

I would say it's because tumblr has a much smaller userbase than it used to. For whatever reason SAO fandom is mostly dead there. I moved over to reddit mostly.

Twitter is getting smaller, too. I want absolutely nothing to do with Reddit, had some bad encounters there as a bi trans dude. 😭

Didn’t a bunch of people leave because the show got racist af?

Where the hell did racism come from in the reasons? People really just want to yell at SAO for anything they can find. Now, I get that some characters may be acting that way (Vassago does come across as pretty racist against the Japanese in his comments), but the show itself has never condoned racism.

cant speak for everyone but I know most people here left because of toxic fans, queer fans especially.

Are we referring to the homophobes and transphobes who can't stand us?

The homophobes are gone but they took creators with them it seems. My favorite writer/ editor left twice and I don’t know if they’re ever coming back or if they’re okay or if they’re stories will ever be finished. I miss him so much 😢 My favorite artist left too and deleted everything but they said they couldn’t deal with the racism in Wou so I understand that much. They felt betrayed. I want them both to find new shows they love and more trans characters to write about! 😊

Again, I won't rewrite my last post but I don't get where the racism discussion is coming from.

I am truly sorry that people are leaving. All I can promise is that I won't be leaving anytime soon. As long as there's an audience, I'll be on Tumblr.

And I don't see myself abandoning my fics either. My progress on AO3 is a little slow right now due to a huge wall of work and school and fic events. But nothing's dropped, I'm just taking longer than usual.
