American Mandala : Accepted to the 2019 California State Fair Art Exhibit.
“Mandala” is an Indian/Hindu/Buddhist name for an illustration that maps the universe according to a particular iconography. As America’s culture is changing dramatically, I tried to envision what a mandala without iconography would look like. This painting is a description of that experience. The main shape within the painting is a tesseract, a mathematical model that through its movement describes time. The smaller cube repeatedly expands to encompass the larger. At the very center I included two different colored triangles. I envision these wrestling for control by alternately making contact with three of the six internal sides of the cube, forever warping and dancing, never able to encompass the other. Ultimately then, the painting is a map of our internal and external experience—growing, observing, challenging, assimilating. . . A mandala.
