OC KISS WEEK #3: Saraanmina, emotional kiss

“The Inquisition didn’t just name a knife-ear as its leader; it hires savages to do its dirty work.” The red templar stops in front of the Vashoth with a high-bridged nose and a proud expression despite her split lip. “As if we needed any more proof that the Elder One is right.

“As if we needed any more proof that the Elder One is a racist dildo.”

That earns Saraan a backhand across the face from a hand covered in red lyrium crystals. They scrape at her skin, and she worries for a moment as she works her jaw to shake off the pain. They don’t seem to have broken her skin, so she judges that she got off all right.

“The Elder One has no use for them, save possible information on the Inquisition,” the one who struck Saraan says dismissively as she walks on. “Dispose of them. Start with the one who shoots off her mouth.”

Rough, crystalline hands grab Saraan, drag her forward and shove her to her knees—so they don’t have to reach up to get to my neck, she thinks with a grim humor. She doesn’t react to the touch of edged metal at her throat, but one of her squad, the youngest, shouts, “Saraan!”

The red templar leader hones in on him. “You can save her,” she offers. “Just tell us where to find the Inquisition.”

Saraan is talking before the templar is done: “If I hear a word out of any of you answering her, Shokrakar is gonna hear about it from me!”

The distant thudding of hooves is a familiar sound to anyone spending time in the Emerald Graves, and one of the templars looks up, hoping to see a herd of halla that could be thinned for dinner.

He has an arrow between his eyes before he can register that the hooves, for the most part, belong to horses.

Her executioner’s grip slackens, and Saraan snatches the opportunity to surge to her feet, grabbing the knife he intended to kill her with and plunging it into his throat. She yanks it out, tests its balance, and throws it, all in one movement, and the knife sinks home between the leader’s eyes.

A stroke of color catches Saraan’s eye, and she turns to find a halla galloping into the clearing, its rider not even using her hands to guide it, instead occupied with drawing her bow once again and releasing another long arrow to stop another red templar from attacking Saraan.

“Get their weapons!” Saraan shouts to her squad, and feels a spark of pride when they immediately begin laying about them with elbows, fists, knees, and feet—and soon, with swords and knives. Saraan scoops up a fallen polearm for herself. She’s never been good at close quarters fighting, but she knows enough to use her height and reach to outfight human enemies. Plus, she has to impress the woman on hallaback, doesn’t she?

Another long arrow sinks into a templar archer not far from her, and she drops her polearm, ducking into a roll under the swipe of another red templar’s sword, and grabs the fallen archer’s bow, nocking one of his arrows, turning, aiming, and firing. Her would-be attacker goes down in a second.

The surprised templars are dispatched quickly, leaving Saraan almost breathless with the speed of their victory. She swings around to shoot the last one as he tries to flee—

His head goes flying, parted from his shoulders by a single sword blow from the leader of the Tal-Vashoth on horseback charging into the clearing. She pulls her horse to a stop in front of Saraan. “Nice work, Adaar,” Shokrakar says.

Saraan acknowledges the high praise from her commander with a nod and a small smile. “Ma’am. Wouldn’t have been possible without Haormina.”

The halla rider has slipped from the back of her mount her robe and her hair streaming behind her as she runs, and Saraan catches her in her arms, holding her tight. “Saraan, my Saraan,” Haormina breathes. “I was so afraid I wouldn’t get here in time.”

“You did, Mina,” Saraan says. “Thank you so much. I—”

Whatever she was going to say is cut off and driven from her mind by Haormina pressing an insistent kiss to her mouth. Saraan kisses back, glad she’s alive to do so, until Shokrakar coughs pointedly.

“Get a room,” the leader of the Valo-Kas mutters, wheeling her horse around. “Grab their weapons and supplies!” she calls to the rest. “They won’t be needing ‘em anymore, and the requisition officer’ll be happy to see ‘em!”

Saraan looks back to Haormina, and the elf giggles to offset their embarrassment. Saraan kisses her Mina one last time, and they part to help loot the red templars’ camp.

“Since her fear did her no good, she ceased to be afraid.”

And when she ceased to be afraid, she stepped up to stand beside Saraan and said simply, “Shall we, vhenan?”

Saraan glanced beside her at her Haormina with a smile. “Let’s, kadan.”

Two arrows were drawn from quivers, nocked to bowstrings. Two bows drew smoothly back. Two breaths were exhaled in a simultaneous soft whoosh.

Two arrows were loosed.

Two arrows found their marks.

Two red templars fell dead.

Corypheus’s army learned that day to fear, nearly as much as the Inquisitor himself, the two archers on the ridge. They feared the streaming hair, black and white, feared flowing red and gold robes, feared curving horns and golden eyes. Their fear did them no good, but they could not cease to be afraid.

what is something saraan has always wondered about haormina?

why she didn’t leave her family.

saraan gets family loyalty, sure, but her view of it is tainted after that final, catastrophic fight she and her dad had before saraan left. and she’s seen the hidden strength in haormina, so she wonders why mina didn’t just....leave. when mamae and savenal treated her Like That. sure, she knows mina left fo a while when she married out of the clan, but then she went BACK to the ppl who made her into this quiet, almost frightened creature

saraan doesn’t get it, but she’s glad that mina’s happy now, and she’ll protect her mina from any awful shit, whether from family or others.

He should learn to ask for help sometimes. Fenedhis. But when he’s not worried about responsibility--his calm is...helpful. Infectious. As is his humor. He helps when I’m over-invested in whatever task or burden.”

The horses’ hooves made no sound against the dark ground as they cantered onward, so Saraan kept her words to a whisper to the frail, unconscious body tucked in front of her in the saddle. “Don’t you let go. Don’t you dare let go.”

The princess did not respond, and Saraan touched her heel to her horse’s flank, urging him to a gallop. “Stay with me, my Mina,” she begged. “Don’t die on me again. Don’t you fucking dare let go!”
