Soulhome by Sarah Lin (The Weirkey Chronicles 1)
I have not consumed a book like that in a while. I mean, staying up after midnight kinda consumed. Had me thinking about it until I finished it at work the next morning because holy shit that’s so cool kinda consumed. It was an experience.
Soulhome is the first book in a progression fantasy series about Theo, a man reincarnated onto the Nine Worlds, not once but twice. The second time around, he gets a fresh, if dirty start to crafting his soulhome, the structure within people’s souls that gives them power and magic. The more well considered and stable the soulhome, the more powerful the person. This is clearly the aspect that Lin spent the most time considering, because even if the rules aren’t extensive, they are well thought out and super cool. I could geek out about this part for pages, but we’ll move on.
The story is nothing special, standard early training arc that takes place at a school of sorts. Other than the primary motivation (revenge against a man who betrayed and (un)killed him), it’s about what you expect. The characters are a good bit of fun though. And even though I can see him being too much like an edgelord for some folks to enjoy, it hits a sweet spot for me. I am rooting for the depressed man in his bastard era.
Anyway, I’m off to read the next book. Y’all enjoy, and if you like progression fantasy, I highly recommend.
