The Reasons Behind the Pokemon on Sam's Team:
Okay basically this is the absolute perfect pokemon for Sam, no exceptions. Sam always wanted a dog (still does actually, haha). He loves dogs the most, so you have this childhood dream realized and of course this is gonna be his first and best choice.
Growlithe is known as the "puppy pokemon" and that would be an acceptable choice for a child of Sam's age, since he was younger than both Dean and Cas were. But he was also younger than the norm for getting your first pokemon or trainer's liscense in this AU, so Growlithe was just a pet at first. Not to mention "puppy eyes". Need I say more? I will though.
See, Growlithe are also the main pokemon of the police force. In Pokemon, every Jenny has her Growlithe. I find this tie to the law and normalcy really awesome considering Sam's dream of being a lawyer: someone who also upholds the law, just in a different way.
"It has a brave and trustworthy nature. It fearlessly stands up to bigger and stronger foes." – Golddex
Oh lord hold me, I am going to cry. This sounds a mite familiar, eh? Trustworthy might have been blackened a little, but standing up to bigger and stronger foes? It doesn't get much bigger or stronger than Lucifer. Although it is also applicable to wee!sammy and his constant butting of heads with John.
"Its proud and regal appearance has captured the hearts of people since long ago." – diamond/pearl/platinum/black/white pokedexes
Ahahahaha I'm sorry all I can say is that this matches Sam's flowing locks rather well. It also hints a little towards his ability to gain the trust of the victims and witnesses on their cases. Especially during the early days.
The other fitting thing about Growlithe and Arcanine is that you have this cute little puppy that grows up into this massive (6′3″ / 1.91m - it's frickin huge, guys) powerful beast. Which is basically just Sam all over. In regards to typing, I find that Sam and fire types fit together the best, mostly due to the fact the he only knew fire as a tool so he had none of the stigmas that Dean associates fire with, and that he had a literal baptisim by fire: a birth through flame that put his whole family into a new life. Fire is Important to Sam's character. (Plus, you know, in Hell he was shown to be on fire, whereas Dean was in chains. It's the little things.)
In response to Jabberwockypie; Dean was uncomfortable with Growlithe because it’s a fire type and Sam was fairly young when he got it. Growlithe and Arcanine are too bright and pure to look or remind anyone of a hellhound. On the other hand, Mightyena and more specifically HOUNDOOM… Those would be another matter altogether.
2.Chikorita/Bayleef/Meganium:
Not gonna lie, the first thought for me was that Sam needed a grass type because salads. When you examine it a bit deeper though, you can see that salads were a way for Sam to try and balance his life through his diet, and coincidentally getting a grass type starter is Sam's way of balancing his team.
"A sweet aroma gently wafts from the leaf on its head. It is docile and loves to soak up the sun’s rays." - Golddex
"The scent of spices comes from around its neck. Somehow, sniffing it makes you want to fight." - Golddex
"The aroma that rises from its petals contains a substance that calms aggressive feelings." –Golddex
It seems to me that Chikorita's growth seems to loosely mirror Sam's growth. From a child who was more or less content (arguable but shhh. COULD be content more than not) – to a pre-teen and teenager who was aggressive, abrasive, and dissatisfied with his world – to an adult and now/the future where he's trying to set things right, think things through, and settle down.
Also, I was totally enthralled with the idea that Dean picks on Sam mercilessly for this pokemon because have you seen Meganium? It's gold. (oh god was that a pun? whoops!) Seriously, a cute dinosaur with a PINK FLOWER? CALLED MEGANIUM? Me-GAY-nium? Mega-gaynium? Flower child? The insults are endless. It's perfect.
Also pretty shallow reasoning at first but hey, there are no moose pokemon so Stantler will have to do. (I'm boycotting black and white because no.)
Now I'm not sure if you're noticing this but there was an interesting pattern that developed where Dean has mostly first gen pokemon and Sam has mostly second gen. This was unintentionally but kind of interesting and fitting.
SO! Stantler! Fitting because moose, but also because it's a normal type that learns a lot of psychic moves. Which also, incidentally, makes it invulnerable to ghost type attacks. Like how Sam was briefly invulnerable to demon mojo that one time. Other than that, I find that the overall feel of the pokemon suits Sam. Yep, there's not much to it.
My immediate reasons were that Sam needed a fighting type and the Meditite/Medicham are perfect because they are fighting/psychic, symbolizing Sam's duality in that he was trained extensively in the body but he prefers to fight with his mind.
"It never skips its daily yoga training. It heightens its inner strength through meditation." –firereddex
Ahaha, okay. First, Sam would totally do yoga. You can't tell me otherwise. He would at least try it - maybe Jess made him idk. Secondly, I'm going to take meditation and use it as a metaphor for Stanford or school. For both Meditite and Medicham, meditation is the key to their mental prowess. And as much as this might seem bad to say, this is the same for Sam.
Sam is very much the type of learner and intellect that the school system is geared towards. He likes learning and remembering facts, doing research, writing and arguing essays, and conventional methods of education work for him. That's where his intellectual strengths lie. We can look at Stanford as a sojourn into the mountains for some intensive meditation, and as a respite for his soul. Even though he didn't physically GO to Stanford in this AU (I think... I'm not totally sure yet.) that idea remains.
Plus Medicham is pink, so Dean will continue to make fun of Sam for it.
Absol was kind of a last minute epiphany. I'm not a fan myself, but it suits Sam rather well. Absol is representative of a whole lot of different things: demon blood, visions, Sam's good intentions, and also his conviction to his ideals.
Demon blood because it’s a dark type, which along with ghost are the types I use to represent the demons in this AU - which is to say that they are their preferred types. The demon blood also gave Sam visions. Visions of death and destruction.
"It senses coming disasters and appears before people only to warn them of impending danger." -diamond/pearl dex
"It appears when it senses an impending natural disaster. As a result, it was mistaken as a doom-bringer." - firered dex
Okay, so, Sam got these awful visions because of an awful thing that he couldn't really control, and he tried his best to use them for good. How many times did they go charging across the country to try and save people from dying like they did in Sam's visions? (Granted Azazel led them on, but still!)
On the 'mistaken as a doom-bringer' note, we can talk about the apocalypse and how pretty much the whole hunting community hated Sam. I guess I'm drawing parallels between the mostly unfounded hatred for Absol in the pokeverse and the hatred for Sam because he was Lucifer's vessel/seen as the boy king/wanted by demons/take your pick. (Which also brings us back around to dark type).
Conviction comes from the willingness to do what they think best despite the challenges. For Absol, it continued trying to warn people despite hate and fear. And for Sam… take your pick, really. He always does what he thinks is right. (Positive and negative implications intended)
Woo, getting less and less coherent but only one MORE TO GO.
It was never a scyther for sam. Scizor was traded to/given to Sam from Ruby. It represents the demon knife, blood and betrayal. But also the preference for knife usage, which Sam inherited from Mary. ("Mother and son also shared the same style of wielding and fighting using blades." -supernatural Wikia. Mary had a scyther on her team.) I'm really tired so I'm not going to elaborate on those ideas, but you can hopefully extrapolate on your own.
Now for Drey! + pls tell me why you decided to arrange Sam’s team like this
Well, it started with Sam sitting and Growlithe at his back because those two are closest of the team, and sort of expanded from there. I knew I wanted Sam to be more casual and relaxed than Dean’s team, and I also just wanted these to be a little slice of life-y. Dean is adventuring, and Sam is also out adventuring. But at the same time he’s studying (The education system is different in this AU). So, I started with Sam studying and then his team is very supportive and close knit so they’re all interacting with each other and relaxing – except Scizor and Absol. Who, while both are a part of the team, both are separate and darker entities (haha tities) that flank and protect. They’re ready to attack or defend. I dunno. I didn’t think about it a whole lot while I was doing it. I just did what came naturally and fit aesthetically.
Overall I wanted Sam to have a more balanced team than Dean, because he seems more balanced as a person. But it ended up just being skewed in a different direction, which makes sense.
