Alamaeus ran over the line once…. Twice… three times over again.
It was confusing and convoluted, causing him to get a headache. Honestly, it felt more like a nightmare, the longer he looked at the recipe.
Trying to read it once more again, he moved his lips in silent murmuring, his brows pinched together in thought. Abruptly, he would be interrupted by Sarahnis, coming in through the door to the house itself and spotting him immediately on the sofa, trying to read through the book he’d plucked up in the market at a sale.
“What do you have there, Maeus?”
“Mm… A recipe book, I think. It just doesn’t make sense.” He sounded as frustrated as he looked.
“What do you mean it doesn’t make sense? What doesn’t make sense?” She practically bounced as she went over to the back of the sofa, leaning down over his shoulder and resting her head right next to his, trying to read what he was reading. Had Maeus not been so frustrated, perhaps he’d take note of the closeness, yet for now he had not.
Instead, the man merely opened the book more to her, so he could see the roughly written words scrawled along the flimsy paper. It looked like a child had written it, more than anything, and the lines dipped and rose far out of place of a more skilled writer.
“See? Right here, this doesn’t make sense… ‘Be filled with bread or toast or a combination of these two extremes’.”
Sarahnis hummed lowly, her own brows coming together. Her silence was long, yet suddenly she shot up again. She seemed, almost, as if in that moment everything made sense. Alamaeus watched her, his brows raising, and a light of hope in his eyes. Would she be able to better understand what this terrible recipe was saying?
“That doesn’t make any sense!” She exclaimed, big smile still on her face.
Ah… it was a chance, he supposed… A terrible translation, nonetheless.

It was far before the crack of dawn that Alamaeus had woken himself up. Rubbing sleep from his tired eyes, he didn’t waste too much time getting about his morning routine. With a washed face, his hair freshly pulled up into a bun, he quietly made his way out of his room and went straight to the kitchen.
He wasted no time in flipping on the arcanic lights to the wide room, glancing over the shining marble counters and the gleaming pans. There was that small warmth of familiarity that he felt, and he basked in it for that small moment. Eventually, he’d step forward, turning the knob to the stove and letting it begin to heat to the necessary temperature.
Once satisfied that it was well and set, he quickly set to action elsewhere. A pan and bowls were pulled from the cabinets. The pantry was raided for the necessary ingredients. Flour, sugars, other dry powders for baking, chocolate chips, and of course, some bananas that he’d been keeping for a few days to soften. He smiled as he inspected the fruits, his fingers pressed into the flesh to see that they were the perfect consistency that they needed to be. Eggs and butter were the next to get, laying each of the items next to a smaller bowl for their later use.
It was like a dance, what followed. The familiar motions of mixing together the ingredients. Dry in one bowl, each measured specifically to a long memorized recipe, and wet in another. The bananas became a mushed substance mixed into sugar and butter. Two bowls became one as the consistency of the lumpy ingredients became a smooth batter, dotted with the dark chocolate chips he’d tossed in for surprise. The entire kitchen was starting to smell like the fruit that had been put into the batter.
Finally, he pulled over a pan, taking a spray across it’s surface before dumping the batter all into the rectangular container. Smoothing over the light brown mixture, he smiled again at his quick work, then brought some more sugar to coat the top of the surface.
The oven was ready, and Maeus turned to slip the mix completely into the heated container. He reached to set one of the multiple arcanic timers for the proper time and brushed off his hands.
The bread was done, at least.
Next was the coffee. An easy task, now, considering the device they had for it. Fresh beans were poured in, ground up, and then deposited in a filter. With the touch of a button, the machine whirred to life, warming water that was in a tank in the back and starting to brew coffee for him.
He was in a good mood, well and awake now, starting to clean up the mess of the bread he’d made up and drying the bowls out so he could continue on. By the time he was finished with that, he noted that the sun had broke over the horizon and was filtering in through one of the windows. He nodded to himself. Good timing. Perfect.
A glance was given to the coffee- finished. Perfect.
In a smooth motion, he pulled out a mug, pouring a cup and then placing it next to a seat on the bar island. A plate and silverware was placed soon after right next to it, making it look like a nice and presentable place.
Perfect.
As soon as he was finished with that, he moved back towards the hall to the bedrooms. All the way to the end, he’d stop before the door that he’d be so careful about sneaking by earlier in the morning. Two soft knocks were given to the door right before he turned the knob to open to the dark, messy room.
“Sarahnis… It’s time to wake up. Come to the kitchen whenever you are up. I’ve made you some coffee.”
He knew that it’d wake her up, and already he could see the lump of blankets shift and move with her starting to rouse from her sleep. He smiled at her, then slipped back from the door, leaving it open so that she could start to smell that clear banana scent in the air now.
Nothing could wake her up quicker than the smell of the food.
Alamaeus was quick to fall back into the fluid motions of cooking, pulling out more of the eggs along with some cold meats and fresh herbs from their garden. A pan was oiled and eggs cracked out into a bowl and whisked to perfection, herbs placed into the mixture. He poured it slowly out across the pan, watching as the yellow spread and sizzled against the oils.
He heard the scuffling sound of someone coming in, and with a glance over his shoulder, he saw Sarahnis there. She had a blanket still wrapped around her shoulders and her hair a disheveled mess of strawberry blonde. There was a little ‘mrmm’ sound on her end, clearly her own sort of good morning as she found her spot at the bar he’d set out for her.
“Good morning.” He said over to her in response, looking back to the food he was busy preparing, “Did you sleep well?”
There was a little sigh over his shoulder and with another glance, he just saw a happy little smile on her face, now looking at him. She’d nod her head and he gave a small smile back in return. While he could never dare admit it vocally, she was absolutely adorable like this. Too tired to speak up fully, yet happy all the same.
He sprinkled some cheese and the meat into the top of the raw side of the eggs, the spatula easily flipping it over into a half before he turned it over completely to cook more. “I made some banana bread with chocolate chips in it, just like you asked for. It’ll be done by the time that we’re done eating breakfast. It might be a little too hot to eat immediately, so you have to make sure to at least wait for it to cool so you don’t burn your tongue.”
It only took a few more moments before he determined it was well and done enough for her. Picking up the pan, he’d turn and walk over to where she sat, carefully pulling the fresh omelette from the pan and right to her plate before her.
“Once that’s done, we can decide what we want to do for the rest of the day.”
She turned and looked at him with that sleepy smile, “That sounds like a great plan, Maeus.”
Once again, there was that warm feeling in his chest at the sight of her in such a state. He felt a surge of accomplishment, having been able to get it all done in time and just exactly as he’d planned.
There was a moment, he knew, that perhaps he’d been standing there a tad too long and simply not saying anything. Yet… with how the morning was going, there was one last thing he felt he needed to do. In a quick motion, pan still in hand and all, he leaned in to quickly press a kiss to her soft cheek.
It was held for just a few moments, but then quickly drawn back, his cheeks coloring brightly while he tried to continue to act as normal as he could. She was surprised, yet it was clear it was not something she’d disliked. Not after everything they both knew and felt…
17th: Share the last thing your character got genuinely excited about.
The book was wonderful.
Front to back, leather bound, handwritten with anti-ageing enchantments. The inside inscription was personalized, made with care by someone who obviously meant it more than just a passing message. Each page filled with careful instructions, the diagrams hand crafted by a artist of great skill.
He had found it on his bed, badly wrapped in bright green paper that seemed to sparkle in the light. There was a ribbon knotted around it messily, but obvious with attempt to try and make it look partially like a bow. A note was shoved under the string, creased by some trouble pushing it in there, but finally in place.
It had read with care:
“Maeus,
I hope you make all of the recipes for me. I especially liked the strawberry cake on page 345!
Love,
Sara”
When he’d unwrapped it, he was thrilled to see the title. A cookbook, one that he’d been waiting for months and months. Time had been so chaotic as of late he hadn’t even realized that it had been released, and here it was. The author even had written him good wishes and more on the inner cover.
He was beyond excited, the moment he had found it he had taken off from his room and went straight to the kitchen. That night, Sarahnis and Alamaeus had ate well, and their desert was a magnificent strawberry cake.
3rd: Write about a conversation your character overheard and wished they hadn't.
There was a bang… then another.
It was late- far TOO late. Alamaeus sat up in bed, looking around a moment in the darkness, trying to figure out where the noise had come from.
There was another muffled noise, far off… someone talking?
Maeus was tired and wasn’t sure, but what he was certain of is that it was coming from the kitchen. His kitchen. And he most certainly did not like the idea of someone being in his kitchen this late at night.
Another bang.
Maeus made his way slowly to the door of his bedroom, opening the door in a way that would avoid the terrible creaking noise.
The sound of a whisper… a hushed tone that seemed not so hush in the silence of the home.
There was a frown present, the man starting to tense up. There shouldn’t have been anyone in there, and if it was something bad… he’d prepare to throw a good fight at it. It wasn’t as if he couldn’t.
He snuck down the small hallway, his feet silent against the wooden floors he knew so well. Inch by inch he made his way towards the kitchen. The sounds seemed more clear now, and just as it came into view, he sucked in a breath and his eyes widened.
There, right on the countertop- the KITCHEN countertop was a pair of people. Fully in the nude and clearly going at one another in a very promiscuous way.
Already, Alamaeus felt heat rise to his face out of embarrassment… stumbling upon such a scene so abruptly. He rose his hand to his mouth, suddenly painfully aware of every little sound that he made… and every sound they made.
There was the slap of flesh, the quiet moan and a small plead for more laced with an adoring name.
His eyes widened further, recognizing exactly what it was… and WHO it was.
“Sarahnis… ah…” Came the familiar baritone.
Her response was clear, all the way to Alamaeus who hid in the hall, “Oh Vy… Vyas. Oh that feels good.”
It was hard to tell if it was another moan or a laugh (light, he didn’t know his brother like that), but Vyas spoke with his voice breathy, “Y’know...I have an idea.”
She laughed in response (that was -actually- a laugh, he could tell), “Wasn’t - ah - this your idea already?”
“Guilty as charged….” There was a pause and his words broke in favor of another low moan. “No, I was thinking we could get some of the food out….”
Oh, light, not the food. Alamaeus paled.
“You’re -hungry-? -Now-?”
Vyas laughed (that had to have been a laugh). “Sara….” He trailed off, his intentions left vague but suggestive.
Alamaeus contemplated running, but that would make too much noise. Oh, light. Light, what-- not the food. Please, light, not the food.
“Maeus would die, Vyas,” she responded with a bit of a laugh, but as there was another bang, she moaned loudly. Loudly, and then tried to hush herself. “No, no. Let’s just--...ah….”
“--keep with--...”
“--this, yes,” she said, her voice starting to get breathier. She was breathing harder and faster and--
-Light-.
The poor man stuck in the dark hallway didn’t know what to do. Both embarrassed and a slight bit panicked at suddenly stumbling upon his brother and his sister-in-law fucking lewdly on the counter. He might have had the right to say something… perhaps… but it was their house.
He tried to move one way, stopping as he heard another moan, louder this time, followed by another clang of pans that had been left on the counter being moved away by their movements.
Oh light… oh light!
He turned quicker, silently scooting away from the scene and back into his bedroom as soon as possible. Once he was finally in the safety of the far more comfortable and familiar space that was his own, the wood of the door pressed to his back, he let out a breath.
“Light… let me forget that.” He prayed ever so quietly, closing his eyes and trying to already wash the image away with any other thought he could conjure.

I know that you had requested a dinner some long time ago, and I will apologize now for not having returned anything in regards to it. Things have been more difficult, as you can imagine, with the losses suffered during our final battle in our deployment. I am afraid cooking, in general, has been a struggle to do with the crutches I still am using. I have not yet gotten word back on any prosthetic, only the promise that it has been worked upon.
Though, that is not what I am writing to you today about. I know you are a very busy woman, with plenty that you have on your plate as it is, but I had wanted to request a favor of you.
As you know, the situation with Sarahnis has grown to be more difficult
As you know, the situation with Sarahnis has grown to be better, with her waking, and all it has come with. She, under your guidance I am sure, has been doing very well in recovering, though very much wishes to come back home. It is not that I am asking for you to allow her home before she has finished whatever it is you need to help her with, but it is you that I would want help from.
Like I wrote earlier, cooking has been a struggle, but I would very much like to make something in celebration for Sarahnis. As such, I would wish that you could come and help me, as I do not think I can do it alone and I do not want to disappoint her. I assure you, there will be plenty for yourself, if you wish for it.
I eagerly wait for your word on this,
Alamaeus Dawnsinger
[There is a quick scribbled line under it]
Miss Elleynah, I would very much like to talk to you about some matters as well, as you are the only person who knows of the problems of the situation that I face currently. Thank you, if you can take the time, that is.
As soon as I saw this artist’s style, I knew I had to nab some commissions!
Esme Sunshard, Lovete Felraven, and Sarahnis Dawnsinger - all done by the VERY talented @mioko-san! They were such a pleasure to work with, and I’m so happy with these commissions of my babs! I highly recommend commissioning them if any of you get the chance!!
