Vedic Highlights From Saravali Part I
First half of chapter 3
Sharing the highlights of the first half of chapter 3 from the book Saravali that I found worth sharing, some lines are straight from the book, some are in my words to make them easy to understand and the examples are mainly my own for explanation purposes
In Vedic Astrology, the personification of the cosmos i.e. time and universe is known as Kalapurusha. The signs represent the limbs of Kalapurusha.
Aries is the head, Taurus is the face, Gemini is the arms, Cancer is the heart, Leo is the stomach, Virgo is the hip, Libra is the space below navel and private parts, Scorpio is the private parts, Sagittarius is the thighs, Capricorn is the knees, Aquarius is the ankles, Pisces is the feet
While for Kalapurusha, the respective limbs are identified from Aries onwards; however for an individual chart, apart from considering the Rasi as above, one should count from natal lagna too
For example :- If a native is born in Scorpio lagna, then this rasi indicates their head. Hence, when assessing the head of a scorpio native, we look at the scorpio and the state of Aries in the chart as well
If at birth, one has benefic planet in a particular sign, the particular limb will be strong, whereas a malefic makes such a limb weak
Six signs counted from leo to cap in Rasi chakra consists of solar half and this half is ruled by sun while six signs in reverse order from cancer to aqua is lunar half and is ruled by moon
In this image, the upper half is lunar half and the lower half is solar half
Except for cancer (ruled by moon) and leo (ruled by sun), each planet from mars to saturn gets to rule two rasis, one from each half
If at birth, more planets occupy the solar half, the native possesses the qualities of Sun in their nature and if more planets fall in the lunar half, the native then possesses the qualities of moon in their nature
To calculate navamsa, we divide the sign into 9 equal navamsas/parts; Each sign is made up of 30°, which when divided into 9 equal parts, results in 3°20' each.
According to the rule, we asign a sign to each navamsa of each sign. For aries, leo and sag, we start the counting from aries; for cap, taurus and virgo, we start the counting from capricorn; for gemini, libra and aquarius, we start the count from libra; for cancer, scorpio and pisces, we count from cancer.
For eg :- If D1 moon is in leo 2° To calculate navamsa, we will begin by dividing leo in 9 equal parts 1st navamsa = 00°00′ – 03°20′ 2nd navamsa = 03°20′ – 06°40′ . . . 9th navamsa = 26°40′ – 30°00′ Now, we start assigning signs to each navamsa 1st = Aries 2nd = Taurus . . . 9th = Sagittarius Since in this example, the D1 moon is in leo 2°, which falls under the range of 1st navamsa i.e. 00°00′ – 03°20′, which falls under aries after we assigned the signs to each navamsa, hence, moon will be in the sign of aries in the D9 chart.
Another method is the stellar method in which we use nakshatras; each nakshatra has 4 padas, so we take first 3 stars or 12 padas; count from Aries and conclude with pisces i.e. assign each pada with a sign starting from Aries ending at Pisces and we proceed in the same manner for each group of 3 stars; for example :- Ashwini-Bharani-Kritika, Rohini-Mrigashira-Ardra, so on.
Going back to our example of Moon in leo 2° falling under Magha The group of 3 stars that Magha will fall into is Magha-Purva Phalguni-Uttara Phalguni Now assigning signs to each pada of these 3 stars :- Magha Pada 1 :- Aries Magha Pada 2 :- Taurus . . . Uttara Phalguni Pada 4 :- Pisces In our example, the D1 moon falls in leo 2° which comes under magha pada 1, now, according to the signs assigned to each padas, magha pada 1 falls under Aries, therefore, the moon in D9 will fall under Aries
Vargottama refers to asc or planet that sits in the exact same sign in both D1 chart and D9 chart. The first navamsa of a movable rasi, the 5th one in a fixed rasi and 9th one in a common/dual rasi are called Vargothamamsas. If the natal lagna is in such Vargothama Navamsa, the native becomes an important person in their circle.
For example :- If a native has leo asc in degree 14 in D1 Now, if we apply the first rule of navamsa calculation Dividing leo in 9 equal parts; 1st navamsa = 00°00' – 03°20' 2nd navamsa = 03°20' – 06°40' . . 5th navamsa = 13°20' – 16°40' . . 9th navamsa = 26°40' – 30°00' Let's start assigning the signs to each navamsa for leo 1st navamsa = Aries 2nd navamsa = Tauras . . 5th navamsa = Leo . . 9th navamsa = Sagittarius As mentioned above, 5th one of the fixed rasi is called Vargothamamsas; Since leo is a fixed rasi and leo asc in D1 is sitting at 14 degrees, which will fall under the range of 5th navamsa which as seen above is falling under leo and therefore, we will have leo asc in both D1 and D9 resulting in Vargothama Navamsa If for example, we had mars in leo 3 degrees instead of leo asc in degrees 14, our placement would have fallen in first navamsa degree range which is falling in the sign of Aries and hence, this means that we would have had mars in leo in D1 BUT in D9 we would have had mars in aries and it won't have resulted in Vargothama Navamsa
THAT IS ALL I HAVE FOR NOW
