Apparently they were canon but then Bryke changed their mind at the last moment. That cave scene where Zutara were supposed to kiss was supposed to start it officially.

iiiiii knoooow that they were supposed to be canooon!! i know! i am in pain bc of it!! pretty much the entirety of book 2 and lbr, at leas half of book 1 was foreshadowing them getting together. and then bryke made the deal with the devil *cough*shyamalan*cough* for money and all that amazing build up ehasz did fell flat TT^TT

and it’s soooooo not fair!!!

but i don’t think they were gonna kiss in the catacombs, too much, too fast, doesn’t fit with either of their arcs
