We continued a Southerly course paralleling the Eastern coast of Oman before crossing the border from Oman to Yemen approaching the Gulf of Aden, an area that had been known for its piracy activity. . Actually since March 2017, there has been a reescalation of pirate activity in this region, with a sharp rise in the number of attacks and suspicious approaches. The on going situation in Somalia, coupled with an increasing confidence of vessels transiting this region, were likely factors behind last years’s attacks. While these attacks are very rare on cruise ships, attempts have occurred in the past. . An anti-piracy drill was required before passing through this area and extra care was taking while transiting through the night, when most attacks would take place due to poor visibility. . Seems quite a drastic approach but that didn’t stopped us from dressing our best and enjoying our formal evening.
