I feel like they’re just losers and this very important moment would just be filled with casual lame loser stuff but to them that would just be super comforting because they know the other is AS COMFORTABLE AS THEY ARE-😭😭😭 my Shaylas😭😭😭 I’m so obsessed w them rn so drawing this was a treat, I feel like I finally got the hang of drawing them. If there’s still abstraction in the Chill Au, do they still do funerals and stuff like that? Or does abstraction work differently here?

Great question!!

They do definitely have funerals in the Chill AU and since I don’t really know how abstraction works in the show, for the time being, abstraction in this AU is basically death by way of losing your mind (this’ll prob change as more lore from the show is revealed). The body left behind from an abstraction is not that person, it is the dark-matter of their digital form with all of the human-code removed.

Jax still lost Ribbit and later Kaufmo was lost as well, but in this AU he opened up to his friends about what happened and how he was feeling and was able to survive the incident with his humanity intact.

After Kaufmo’s abstraction and Pomni’s entrance the tension slowly dissipates from the humans and their bond is reformed just as strong. Caine is also a lot less selfish in this AU and tries really hard to impress the humans because he loves them, not because he wants them to love him.

Basically this AU is not perfect, there is still tension and drama but the core of the humans bond and their willingness to include Caine is what makes it the Chill AU. There is no problem too big or small for them to help each other with.

For your AU, as you said, Caine loves the humans under his care. Does this mean he too participates in the funerals? Does he ever feel guilty that he doesn't know how to fix them since he knows it troubles the others a lot?

Anyway yeah, he does attend funerals… eventually.

Basically in the AU, Caine acts exactly the way he does in the canon show until Zooble arrives and sees Caine’s callousness toward Ribbit’s abstraction, they demand he start treating the humans (and esp the abstraced humans) with more respect. The humans (mainly Ragatha and Gangle) try to explain to Caine why certain things he does scares them or stresses them out.

Caine doesn’t really understand, he thinks the humans just don’t like him and he isn’t good enough. This starts a downward spiral for not only Caine, who is intruding on the humans more and more to win them over, but also Kaufmo, who is frightened of Caine and believes these impulses are because Caine is trying to harm him in some way. Kaufmo becomes paranoid and overly analytical, pushing everyone away.

When Pomni enters the circus, Caine is too busy fussing over her arrival to see Kaufmo abstract. He takes Pomni right to her bedroom to decompress and get used to her surroundings, providing her with everything she might need. Think of it like bringing a kitten home and quarantining it in a single room until it’s not so nervous. It isn’t until Zooble breaks into Pomni’s room and scares the shit out of her to tell Caine that Kaufmo abstracted that he finds out. He leaves Pomni in her room, promising to check on her the next day. When he gets back to find Gangle and Kinger helping Ragatha’s glitching hand and Jax running around waving a red flag trying to keep Kaufmo away from the others, he reassures everyone that it will be ok, fixes Ragatha and asks everyone if they would like to say anything to Kaufmo before gently placing him in the cellar. (The cellar situation is subject to change as lore from the show continues to drop).

The next morning Zooble knocks on Pomni’s door to introduce themself and apologize for scaring her and invite her to Kaufmo’s funeral, which they are having that evening. Caine shows up to check on Pomni and tries to dissuade any “adventuring” until she feels fully stable in her room, Pomni urges to go to the funeral, asking Caine to join her. She felt comforted by Zooble’s forwardness and wants to make connections with the people here, even under such sad circumstances.

This is the first funeral Caine attends and it puts a lot of things in perspective for him, even if he does not fully understand most of it. He gets to see how much the humans love each other, how they miss each other when they’re gone, how they cling to each other for comfort. In a way, Kaufmo’s funeral makes Caine feel a little bit human. He treats the humans much softer after that, really worrying about how certain things will affect them and their relationships.

He craves the humans love as well, he wants them to love him as much as he loves them and after the funeral he realizes the key ingredient to love he was missing the whole time was tenderness. This causes him to feel incredibly guilty over the abstractions. The human’s hallway stresses him out, makes him sad and reminds him of his failures, of the people he lost because of his callousness.

He asks the humans if he can remove the pictures of the abstracted characters in the hallway and instead create a memorial room they can visit whenever they want. The humans think this is a lovely idea to honor their friends and keep the thought of abstraction separate from their daily lives.

I would say the day Caine creates the Abstraction Memorial is the day the Chill AU truly begins.
