Continuing my voyage through the aged portfolio of Sass Winery wines from Oregon (and in the case of the Chardonnay, Washington). We tasted two 2007 white wines - a Willamette Riesling and a Columbia Gorge Chard. Both wines were holding up beautifully - great texture and aromatics, nowhere near their peak. Of the two, the Riesling was a clear winner - a really superior wine. For 13 years old it was bursting with classic aromatics and was so bright and zippy. Fruit and acid in perfect harmony. Would’ve guessed 2015. My case of Sass wine arrived and it was such a pretty day we decided to have a bottle of the 2017 Riesling outside by the fire. Delicious young wine, it’ll only get better with age. We followed the Riesling with a bottle of Sass 2013 Vieux Amis Pinot Noir. A beautifully vibrant Pinot drinking perfectly. Not a hint of age. I’ve since ordered a 2007 white and a 1999 Pinot from the winery to test how well they age. Great stuff and ridiculously affordable. Have you had a Pinot Blanc recently? Opened this 2015 from Sass Winery in Oregon - one of my favorite wineries and winemakers. Jerry Sass is a wizard in the vineyard and a great winemaker. This Pinot Blanc was aged in a combo of neutral oak and stainless steel. Wine sat on the lees with occasional stirring which contributes that gorgeous color and texture. The wine exploded with fruit aroma and on the palate was beautifully balanced. Jeremy says age just had an ‘07 that drank nicely.
