Hello, hello, everyone! My darling sinners! Today is my 26th birthday, and I am very close to 500 followers. To celebrate, I will be posting something every day for the next seven days, whether that be art or writing.
The next upload of "Love, Eternal" will technically be part of this celebration, but if I get a wild hair, I may post more. We shall see!
I love how everyone is just being horny on main these days. It's honestly liberating to see everyone just be feral about fictional characters. This perv obey me characters era is just *chef's kiss*
Welcome to the second chapter of the prologue, Reignition. Here, we see the fallout and aftermath of the last chapter. This will be the last chapter before we go back to the present timeline to see the result of Chapter 5. Let's go.
CW: MC is afab, uses she/her pronouns. MC is human, nonpoly. Moments of sadness, grieving reader
After a while, Diavolo suddenly heard a peculiar noise. When he realized it was coming from you, he looked down, and realized you were lightly snoring.
Ahh, she fell asleep. How cute, he thought. Oh, wait. She fell asleep on me. This is good, right? Does that mean she trusts me? Maybe she was simply exhausted. Oh no, I need to go to my office, but I don't want to wake her up. What should I do?
"Young M-" Barbatos stopped short, seeing your sleeping frame leaning against Diavolo. The butler tilted his head, finding the sight of the two of you rather endearing. Diavolo looked at his butler with pleading eyes, as if to say, "Please help me."
Knowing what to do, Barbatos approached silently. He carefully lifted your head, just enough for Diavolo to scoot down the sofa and away from you. With precision, gentleness, and patience, Barbatos took his time to lay your head down on a pillow he grabbed, so that your torso was laying on the sofa cushions. With the same diligence, he brought your feet up to the rest of the sofa so that you were fully laid out on it, all while still asleep.
Diavolo watched with wonder, realizing Barbatos probably had experience in this from when he was a child.
Barbatos left and returned with a fluffy blanket and draped it over you. Both demons stood there, watching you sleep. Though, Barbatos snapped out of his trance faster than Diavolo did.
"Young Master," he whispered. Diavolo snapped out of it and followed Barbatos to the prince's study.
Once the door was shut, Diavolo strode to his desk and stopped, looking out the window. He turned back to Barbatos and asked,
"What did you find out?"
"I do believe she may have called it off with him," Barbatos replied.
Diavolo nodded. "I figured as much. And the exchange program?"
"In-tact, my lord, alive and well," the butler replied.
Giving a sigh of relief, Diavolo replied, "Very well. I suppose I won't be hard on Lucifer then. I don't want to cut into their business either, I think she might be offended by it."
Diavolo then tilted his head, and looked to his butler again.
"How do humans normally deal with heartbreak?"
Barbatos gave it some thought and then replied, "Well, I think what MC is doing now is part of it. She found comfort in someone she could trust to give it. I imagine being in the same house as him is painful, so maybe offering her respite here would be wise and considerate."
With a nod, Diavolo stated, "Interesting."
"Do be warned, my lord, that she will probably need time to process things. I wouldn't jump to start a relationship with her just yet," Barbatos suggested.
Diavolo smiled, "Caught on to that, did you? Don't worry, I will give her space. But I'm also going to offer her to take a few days off RAD, if she so chooses. I just want her to be comfortable."
"That sounds most wise, my lord."
"I believe I'll take my work into the common room so I can be nearby when she wakes," Diavolo stated, grabbing his papers.
"Very good."
-
When you awoke, it was dimly lit in the common room. You were lying on the couch with a cozy blanket on you. Sitting up, you wrapped it around you and looked around. In one corner, Diavolo worked at a small desk with a lamp on, near the window. Quietly, you shuffled over to him and stopped.
"Yes?" he inquired, not looking up from his papers. You said nothing, so he continued, "Go back to sleep MC, it's late."
Suddenly, you wrapped your arms around his neck from behind, causing him to freeze in place. Your head rested against the back of neck, and just as quickly as you did it, you shuffled back to the sofa and laid down again. Diavolo took several seconds to process this, and then realized you gave him a different kind of hug. A smile tugged at his lips, and he continued working.
Not long after, he stood and stretched. He came around to the sofa and looked over the back of it to find you sleeping again, face buried into the back cushion. Diavolo simply stood there and watched, until he yawned. Adjacent to the sofa you were on was another, so Diavolo decidedly laid himself down on it, facing out to see you, your side rising and falling as you breathed.
He felt bad about the idea of leaving you alone, but he didn't want to pick you up, move you, or do anything to scare you, so he thought he could tolerate one night on the sofa. Though, it took him a little longer to fall asleep, he eventually did, your light snores offering a little bit of white noise that he actually enjoyed.
-
Morning came around, and Diavolo woke first. He immediately looked to see you had moved, now facing out on the sofa, and he could see your precious sleeping face, or at least, a portion of it. Most of your body was enveloped in the blanket you had, and you hid most of your face with it as well.
Diavolo left the sofa and stood next to you. He was rather curious about humans, and you were the closest he's ever got to one in this capacity. You weren't terribly different from him aside from the obvious, at least, from what he could tell.
Suddenly, you rolled over onto your stomach and now were completely hidden from view. He smirked and left you to snooze a bit longer, so he could shower and put on fresh clothes. When he returned, he found Barbatos studying you, slightly bent at the hip.
"She's interesting, even when she sleeps," Diavolo said to Barbatos.
Barbatos tilted his head, "Indeed, my lord." The butler then turned to his master, "Breakfast is ready, but I am afraid to wake her."
Diavolo held his thumb and index finger to his chin, in thought, and then said, "I have an idea."
-
"Mm," you mumbled. Your face was buried in a pillow that didn't feel like yours from home. The smell of food, really good food, immediately caught your attention though, so you turned over and opened your eyes. You saw Diavolo sitting on the sofa adjacent to you, and Barbatos standing near a coffee table while he poured fresh tea into a few cups.
"Good morning, MC," Barbatos said.
Diavolo instantly looked at you and smiled, seeing you were awake. Though you hated mornings, you didn't want to be rude, so you sat up on the couch, still with the blanket over your head and shoulders. Diavolo fought hard to keep the laugh bubbling in his throat at how adorable you looked.
"Morning Barbatos, Diavolo," you grumbled.
"Would you like breakfast, MC?" Diavolo asked cheerfully. You nodded, still in a daze, and joined the prince on the sofa he sat on.
Barbatos handed you a fresh cup of tea, which you took gratefully, and let the warmth wake you up. After a few sips, you said in a gravelly voice,
"You could have sent me home, you know. It was rude of me to fall asleep like that."
"Nonsense! It was too late, and it would have been too dangerous for you to go alone. We were happy to have you," Diavolo replied with a sweet smile. "On that note, should you ever like to stay over here, there are plenty of guest rooms. Barbatos and I are always happy to have your company."
You looked between the two demons; a warm feeling settled in your chest when you did so. "Both of you have been incredibly kind to me, and I can't thank you enough for having me," you replied quietly. Biting your lip, you considered your next words carefully, and then continued, "I guess I'm going through some things, and you've both been wonderful in distracting me and keeping my spirits up."
Diavolo's heart pounded at your admission. You were opening up to them, and it meant the world to him to know you could trust either of them in this capacity.
"What I'm trying to say is, both of you mean a lot to me, and I'm glad you're in my life," you finished.
Barbatos bowed, "You are very kind yourself, MC. I can say I've enjoyed your frequent presence here in the castle as of late. It warms my heart to see you and the young master having so much fun, as well."
Diavolo nodded in concurrence with his butler. "We very much care for you, MC, so please, come see us whenever you'd like. Our doors are always open to you."
Your eyes were cast downward as you listened to them, as you fought back tears of happiness. Their words warmed your sad soul. You gave them a tearful smile and nodded.
-
After breakfast was over, Barbatos escorted you back to the House. From now on, you would no longer travel between the two without one of them escorting you. You waved the butler goodbye after thanking him for the escort, and then you turned toward the looming door ahead of you. As quietly as possible, you opened the door and snuck inside.
You almost made it to your bedroom when you heard someone clearing their throat behind you. Coming to a halt, you sighed.
"And where have you been?"
"I stayed the night at the castle, Mammon," you said, turning to the second-born. He stood there with his arms folded. He approached you, looking you over.
"No one tried to make a move on ya, did they?" he asked disapprovingly.
You frowned and continued to your bedroom, Mammon following behind you. "No, of course not. I accidently fell asleep on the sofa, so they just let me stay over," you replied.
Once inside your room, you and Mammon sat on your bed.
"Let's hear it," you said. You knew he wanted to say something.
"So..." he started to say, unsure of himself.
You waited patiently for him to respond. There were a couple things you figured were on his mind, but you wanted to hear it from him first.
"You and Lucifer..."
It was silent while you thought about what to say, but really, you just felt like telling him the truth.
"I'm done with him," you responded.
"As in?" Mammon asked, seeking clarification.
"I broke it off with him. I gave him multiple chances, and they all ended the same way, so I'm done."
Lucifer stood outside near your bedroom door, listening to your words. He figured as much, but now he really knew. Wordlessly, he went back to his bedroom.
Tears welled up in your eyes and spilled over traitorously. "We were never even official anyway, so it doesn't matter," you tried to tell yourself out loud.
Mammon scooted closer to you and put an arm around your shoulder. "Don't say that. It does matter. What he did wasn't right, and you deserve better," Mammon murmured to you.
"Mammon, it hurts," you said, clutching your shirt over your chest, trying to fight back sobs.
"Shh, c'm'here," he said, pulling you into his lap, your face buried in his neck. He wrapped an arm behind your back and another over your knees, holding you tight against him. "I know it hurts, MC, I'm sorry," he murmured. "He doesn't deserve you. It hurts now, but in time it'll hurt less. Plus, you've got the Great Mammon here to take care of ya," he said, trying to comfort you.
You sniffled, and then gave a little smile, "You are great, Mammon," you said into his neck.
His face went red hearing your words, and he stammered, "And-and don't y-you forget it, MC!"
