Regent White Christmas
Regent White Christmas
Everyone who is dreaming of a White Christmas this year need look no further than the Regent Centre in Christchurch, where Theatre 2000 aim to chase away those winter blues with their sparking production of Irving Berlin’s classic White Christmas – The Musical. Curtain up at the Regent for this winter warmer is from Wednesday 26 – Saturday 29 November 7.30pm with a 2.30pm Matinee on Saturday.
White Christmas is a musical based on the Paramount Pictures film of the same name, which starred Bing Crosby, Danny Kaye and Rosemary Clooney. The film’s magnificent score, dazzling choreography, romantic interludes and its mischievous sense of humour and fun made it the highest grossing film at the box office in 1954.
This beloved, timeless and heart-warming musical adaptation features no less than 17 Irving Berlin songs with a book by David Ives and Paul Blake. Amongst those unforgettable hits are, of course, the title song, White Christmas, Sisters, Blue Skies, How Deep is the Ocean, I Love a Piano and Happy Holiday.
WWII Veterans, Bob Wallace and Phil Davis are a highly successful song and dance team. With romance in mind, the two follow a duo of beautiful singing sisters, Betty and Judy Haynes, en route to their Christmas show at a Vermont ski lodge, which just happens to be owned by Bob and Phil’s former army commander.
When the happy-go-lucky quartet arrive at the skiing lodge, they find it practically deserted because of a lack of snow. It is facing bankruptcy but Bob and Phil can’t stand by and watch their beloved old C.O. go down, so Bob goes on national TV to appeal to the men from their old WWII division to come along and drum up some business for their Commanding Officer by staging their entire show at the ski lodge.
The path of true love is never straight forward though and Betty thinks Bob is using the situation for free publicity and she takes off for New York in a huff. Judy and Phil realise that Betty and Bob are secretly in love, so they lure her back to Vermont by getting engaged themselves! When Betty sees the show that Bob has produced, Betty realises that Bob is really one of the good guys!
In the Director’s chair is Georgina Smith. The Musical Director is Lee Marchant and Chorography is by Angie Broomfield
