In the midst of the American holiday season I have a question for the collective

Anyone else have family members that were just kind of awful for the entirety of your childhood

So you move across the country at eighteen and don’t see any of them for a bit

But then return home for the holidays and you’re preparing yourself for the drama filled fight fest that is the holiday you don’t celebrate except for the fact that America commits to it so hard it so you’re kind of forced to participate at least a little

And you go in with the idea that you just have to eat small talk and get out

But then they’re fucking normal

Just normal well adjusted people who respond normally to mild frustrations and don’t hurt the small children for acting like children and aren’t actively insulting all of your life choices like they did for 10+ years

And you feel like a crazy person for a minute cause it’s not like you grew up and realised they were just doing the best they could and you shouldn’t judge them so harshly

They provably got better in the time you were away and now they’re just healthy functional adults who treat you with respect and dignity

And then you feel like an asshole for hating them for all of these years cause apparently they were on their self improvement journey but you can’t stop hating them just a little bit

Cause yeah they got better but getting better doesn’t undo the 18 years of bad they did before?
