when you are bandying about colorized, smoothed, upscaled and retouched "historical photos", unless someone did it all by hand in Photoshop, those are AI-generated imagery. im not sure why so many people seem to think they are something else. they arent. they are generated using math and likelihoods and fiction like any other AI image. the computer is guessing about what should go under the repaired infill, it is guessing about what color the human hair and skin is, it is guessing about the types of metal in the jewelry, the color of the sky, the color of people's eyes. it is guessing about time of day. its fake pictures. fiction. and it looks ugly. i have been on my hobbyhorse about this for decades and i am only getting more pissed off. its bad when humans colorize historical photos and its bad when it's done by an AI. it's ugly, it inserts false information into historical documents, it fucks up forensics and historical research. and its ugly. i dont want to see it
When I found out that human colorized photos were not based on historical information and research, I was really peeved. I was under the impression that each one was the result of an artist/historian sort of combo skillset, researching and identifying individual garments or fabrics, or making best guesses based on details related to time and place. Alas, no, it's just an art thing :<

You actually cannot skip to being good at a creative endeavour that you haven't put much practice into. You cannot trick your way out of the 'knows that your work is not what you want it to be but don't know how to improve it' stage by planning or reading or talking about it really really hard. At some point you just have to craft through it until your brain finds it's own unique way back to the 'everything I make slaps' stage and be prepared to start the cycle all over again. This is legitimately useful reframing. A while ago I started replacing the word "cop" in my vocabulary with "a man with a gun." It really puts things into perspective.

It makes it very clear what you're saying. I can call a man with a gun to threaten or hurt someone mildly inconveniencing me. You're not calling the cops, you're calling A MAN WITH A GUN into a situation that does not warrant a firearm handled by a volatile lunatic who will not be held accountable for his actions.

A rework of a graph I came up with a long time ago that describes my idea of gendered privilege vs oppression.
The idea I am trying to express here is that trans people typically start transition in the "bad [assigned label]" category and then drop down to the gender failure zone. Those few who are very lucky can eventually come out on the other side in the "bad [other label]" category. But nobody makes it to the top, and most still stay in the gender failure zone.
I think it explains some phenomena rather well, like all trans people regardless of identity being affected by all types of transphobia, or conditional male privilege that a certain narrow sector of western trans men is talking about. It also differentiates between the concepts of the bottom of the hierarchy and an underclass of womanhood.
I still feel like the graph is lacking in certain aspects, because I like the terminology "good man" vs "bad man", but I need to make it more clear somehow that it refers to social roles rather than gender identities.
Has anyone ever coined a term that refers to being judged by norms of a certain gender, rather than identifying as that gender?
Side note, I am aware of the work by Nora Hikari, but I don't consider mine to be a branch off of hers. We make some different conclusions (e.g. 5 categories vs 3, or her directly calling hers "genders", while I'm trying to avoid it) and plus, I started working on mine around 2020-2021.
If I were to edit this slightly, I feel like I'd add at the top "ideal (man/woman)" since this is less a reachable goal and more a cultural myth or conceptual being, in regards to your issue with terminology. I also feel like Shizen's power/not power/ faggot (subaltern) essay describes the same concept you're aiming towards well- I feel like this graph is a decent depiction of the concepts we're all rotating in our mental microwaves at the moment in gender circles.
The main reason why I would rather see my idea as separate from her essay is that I disagree with viewing gender as a first and foremost externally assigned position. There exist gender-adjacent social positions - but gender itself is still a personal internal way to react to being sorted, not the sorting itself.
She proposes rejection of an identity model of gender as one of the principal parts of her vision:
Gender, like all "identity categories" relevant to a materialist analysis, is a class structure. Or rather, the model of gender being used for this analysis views gender as a class, rather than a feeling, an essential spiritual characteristic, or any other idealist notion.
and I can't really tear that out of her work and cite only the parts I like.
I do find her essay remarkable for acknowledging that the society has more than 2 distinct gender norms. It was nice to see from someone else, because back when I first started talking about it, it felt like I was alone.

It looks like I have no choice but to be the #1 Cliff Briscoe fan apparently I have no idea why I love this guy and his little shop so much, but I'm going to learn creation engine to make a companion mod for him to hang out with you, I have dialogue ideas, I'm wondering if I can like, youtubepoop his voice lines together or something? I unfortunately can't do an adequate voice for any kinda guy... but I think I could do it in audacity? Regardless, in the next few years maybe we'll have some more Cliff Briscoe content, if anyone else is after it, I don't know, but he's my little guy and I want to do something with him :3 blorbo from my game. I think mods can add end slides too, I'm considering a platonic/romantic storyline option for the courier to retire to Novac and start working on improving that part of the world with him at the end of the story?
