Here are a few more poignant panels of Star Wars’ original queer couple, the fussy 3PO and sarcastic R2, from the very first Sundays-only newspaper comic strips. One reason Russ Manning is my favorite Star Wars writer is that he does not rush -- he let these two knuckleheads float around in space for 4 weeks, and 19 luxuriously-rendered panels, doing nothing but complain, flirt, and marinate in their existential anguish. It’s just so, so romantic and so, so gay. Thank you, Russ❤️

What I love so much about 3PO and R2 is that, even though they are not human, they are also the audience stand-ins and most relatable characters. They’re not heroes and they don’t even really have goals: they are just trying to get by in this crazy, impossible galaxy. This shiny, whiny couple is such a clever way to ground the story, especially to the disenchanted audiences of the 70s and today as we try to find the energy to face our own impossible world. Thank you, silly robots❤️
