Hi There! So, the whole "I want to start a hat blog" thing started with me watching Father Brown on Netflix. The main character "Father Brown" pictured above, wears a peculiar hat on the show. The crown seems to be round, in the same shape of a Bowler hat, but the brim is just a bit too wide to be your run of the mill Bowler. Scenes of the priest from the 1995 movie Casper (featuring Christina Ricci) flooded my mind. The scenes where the silly SNL Priest, Guido Sarducci, comes strolling down the stairs after trying to excercise the house where casper and his brothers live. His head had made a complete 180 but despite the sillyness of that scene, I remembered atop his head was the same hat Father Brown wears! I realized, YES, it's not the first time I see a man of the cloth wearing this type of hat. So what are its origins? Do only clergymen wear these hats? Does anyone else? The hat is called a Capello Romano, literally translating to roman hat, and has been given the nickname of Saturno, because the wide brim can resemble the rings of saturn (wrapped around our planet sized heads apparently). And yes, it seems only men of the church have been known to wear these and only from the 17th century through around the 1970's. Some capellos were worn with different embellishments, different colored chords and different colored silk lining. The colors worn on these hats determined your rank within the church. Popes have been seen wearing these Saturn hats in red with gold accents. Have YOU ever seen these hats? Would you rock one of these in a casual setting? I know I would!!! Hope that was as fun for you as it was for me! Want me to help you identify a type of hat? DM me! It would be my pleasure! #ablogabouthats #capellosaturno #saturnhat #hatsofinstagram https://www.instagram.com/p/B8Xi6tYBpta/?igshid=1ea4w2ois0uk9
