How exactly did a yellow Mastador (or a Black Mouth Cur, if you're talking books instead of movies) sire what appears to be a full blooded Blue Tick Coonhound?

This has bothered me for literally my whole life, ok? 🤣 Especially since puppy Sam looks exactly like Yeller! What happened to the yellow fluff? How did it turn mottled blue-grey? Dog fur doesn't work that way!
