How exactly did a yellow Mastador (or a Black Mouth Cur, if you're talking books instead of movies) sire what appears to be a full blooded Blue Tick Coonhound?

This has bothered me for literally my whole life, ok? 🤣 Especially since puppy Sam looks exactly like Yeller! What happened to the yellow fluff? How did it turn mottled blue-grey? Dog fur doesn't work that way!

Tommy Kirk as Travis Coates in a scene from Savage Sam (1963). Tommy was born in Louisville, Kentucky and passed away Sep 2021 at the age of 79. Tommy was a big star for Walt Disney, beginning with 29 episodes of The Hardy Boys in 1956. Disney was forced to cancel his contract after Savage Sam when it was disclosed 21 year old Tommy was in a gay relationship with an under age boy. His next bad news came on Christmas Eve, 1964 when he was busted at a party for marijuana use. Tommy's other notable credits include an episode of Gunsmoke, Old Yeller, The Shaggy Dog, Swiss Family Robinson, The Absent Minded Professor, Son of Flubber, an episode of The Alfred Hitchcock Hour, Pajama Party, Village of the Giants, The Ghost in the Invisible Bikini, It's a Bikini World, and an episode of The Streets of San Francisco. When Savage Sam was released, Walt Disney said that Tommy should have been top billed over Brian Keith, who only had a supporting role, and it was the best acting Tommy had done.
