If I don't save my ass, I won't even exist/stay alive to save someone else's. And so I have to choose myself over you. That's just natural and logical and sometimes it can seem mean and selfish but it's not. You have to be strong for yourself and you have to be there for yourself. And if you think you have reached that position, then you can help others get there.

But how can you save someone else when you are the one drowning beside them?

Do you agree that sometimes we need to save ourselves first?

I do believe that we first need to find our own strength before we put on the superhero costume, or our care for others may well collapse. That’s the message behind a pen piece of someone in a superman suit I created in December, from a reference photo very kindly provided copyright free by Raw Umber Studios.

I played with light sources so more of the outfit showed, which I simplified to make the piece flatter, more stylised and reminiscent of a cartoon printed on paper.

I used lots of little dots made with Sakura Pigma Micron fineliner pens to create this piece. I think it really shows how the bright colours of the pens with tiny fragments of white paper showing through create a vibrant piece that is also reminiscent of the dot print technology used to initially print these comic book stories.
