          the chime of a notification goes off at the worst time, the shimada tensing as the tone fills the once-silent air. his meditative focus broken &. his eyes opening, he glances over at the smartphone, left on his nightstand.

          for a long moment, he considers leaving it be. he considers returning to it in the morning, when his prayers are complete, sleep attained. it could be nothing more than a notification, could it?

          he relents. he leans forward, peering at the notification in curiosity before scooping the device up. satya vaswani? at this hour?

                [ text: satya. 4:32am. ] I hadn’t expected to hear back so soon; I understand                                                     you’ve been busy. An architect’s work is never done.

          he considers his words once more, idly chewing on his inner lips in thought.

                [ text: satya. 4:33am. ] Would you like to talk about it?

          he will gladly sacrifice meditation for a night, if a friend needs it.

            metal jaw sets beneath his mask. in the silence of the watchpoint, even the echoes off of all-too-thick walls fail to make themselves known to him, as he struggles to restrain his tongue— his temper. it’s an arduous task that’s much easier said than done, an uphill battle he doesn’t believe he’ll be winning.

            “I expect you understand, o’deorain.”

            he can’t help the derision that dominates his tongue when he finally speaks. cybernetic eyes finally come to settle upon her visage. it’s not a kind gaze; he had felt as though he always expected cutting remarks &. scorn from her, as though his imperfect soul was but a point of leverage for her. in plenty of ways, it’s her presence that puts him at unease.

            “why do you not tell me more about my fears? —after all, you seem to               know so much about them.”

         the younger shimada’s former smile downturns, with his fingers tightening around his glass momentarily. the fun, the excitability leaves his expression— leaving behind a somber gaze, swirling the liquid in his glass, his eyes locked on it. he’s silent for a time, digesting the question, considering it carefully.

         when he settles on an answer, his jaw sets as he shifts his posture, relaxing further back into the chair, with his fingers calm on the glass. his eyes don’t leave it, though. he sighs.

         “.. for a time, I had.”

         the truth burns as much as the alcohol he’d been drinking when it rises from his throat, he finds. they were memories of a worse time— or better perhaps. the past is foggy for him, at best. they were moments he hadn’t wanted to confront, for a time; locked in a box &. buried away in the deepest recesses for his mind. when he’d finally embraced them, accepted them, the pain wasn’t so strong anymore. it didn’t stick in his mind on points far too sharp, hook-like in nature. over time, the details became blurrier. it became less about the actions &. the hurt, and more about the lesson that he’d learned.

         this wasn’t something he wanted to divulge— hoped those times would fade, blink out like a candle on a windy night. of course, they didn’t. genji fears they never will. he takes a drink, steeling his nerves &. letting it settle in his veins as he finally continues.

         “for years, I struggled to accept it. fought to find a reason to continue after           that. I hadn’t believed there was a reason I survived it; he was meticulous.           it was always a fault of his— he’d sought perfection, obsessed over it. it           seemed a simple oversight at the time.”

         he pauses for a time. then, a sad laugh.

         “those I met in overwatch helped me find joy in my survival. no longer was           it the worst thing that could have happened.”
