It’s Been 5 Weeks and I’m Still Mourning.

I’m sitting here in Chic Fil a and scrolling through Instagram. Instantly, Nipsey Hussle pops up on my feed. It’s from basketball player, James Harden. Immediately, I burst out crying. From white sports newscasters to Louis Farrakhan....Nipsey is missed! The homage being paid is immensely overwhelming. I can’t even watch his videos or hear his music without feeling sorrow. It’s too fresh! Everyone is eulogizing him on their social media. I even did. This man is the only celebrity I’ve cried numerous tears over. I honestly didn’t even listen to his music like that. His community efforts started to shine in my view AFTER his death. Why is that? Why can’t we smell those flowers when they have bloomed. Instead, my knowledge of Nipsey has happened after his untimely death. Such a man of hustle (no pun intended), realness and class. He was a mixture of what we all wanted to be. Damn. I never question God. Ever. This one was hard not to. Instead, I give The Creator all the glory. This death was like no other. Family members of mine have died and didn’t come close to this effect. It honestly changed my vision at the tender age of 36. The feeling, is unexplainable. It’s like, he awoken something in me that I always knew I had. I’m clocking into work with Nipsey on my mind. He said it best, “I just believe in ownership...I believe in investing in yourself...your foundation should be strong.” See, before Nipseys death, I was a little stagnant, hell still am. I think the way of life got to me. Wake up, work, be a mom, eat, drink hella wine and repeat. The many goals I was working on but the baby steps just wont feeling like they were enough. I continuously complained about how I was gonna make some shit shake. So many goals, so little time was the constant problem. Then, while juicing one night....my IG feed showed the sorrowful news. Not Lauren’s Nipsey! I had just admired their GQ magazine pics with him like 2 weeks ago. I even had to sit down and catch myself. I was really devastated. God Will Rise. The shift I felt wasn’t just within me, it was in the atmosphere. Everyone felt it. When I saw how he turned nothing to something, I immediately started brainstorming. All these talents I had...just sitting on them. I often felt defeated. I was always tired. Adulting was hard! But Nipsey! Nipsey showed us you sleep when you die and you go hard so your children won’t have to want for anything when you do die. Hussle and Motivate. Life is precious and again, I will never question Gods plan. Instead, I just would like to thank Him for giving brown people another inspiration in Ermias. A black man from the hood who carried his community on his back until his last breath. An innovator. A King. That’s the legacy we all want to leave. I cherish his efforts in gentrifying Crenshaw his way and giving his people hope. May his ancestors lead him through those pearly gates and may God welcome him with open arms. Here’s to our communities. May we nourish them. May we give back to them. May we continue to prosper in them. Many have strong opinions that black people were better off segregated. We were forced to spend our money with each other; creating generational wealth. Our communities were stronger than ever. Now, a lot of us spend our hard earned dollars with major companies who don’t like our skin, create racist clothing with hidden agendas all while being paid less than our white counterparts. Here is to a bright and promising future! Death to the crab in the barrel mentality. It’s time to get back to the brotherhood/sisterhood we used to have. Invest in your communities. I repeat. Invest in your communities! They may have taken Nipsey from us, but they’ve birthed millions more. Now....let me start writing this book. I have too much to say.
