Petition for Japanese government’s compensation for cultural facilities to prevent the spread of the novel coronavirus infection.
Please sign it HERE. Anyone can do this!
Petition in English:
To the Government of Japan and Members of the Diet
Currently, live music venues, nightclubs and theatres are in crisis due to the impacts caused by the novel coronavirus. Amidst the calls for self-restraint on events and unnecessary outings, a series of event cancellations have caused a plunge in revenues.
While we understand the importance of the prevention of outbreaks, we can’t find any other choice but continue our business due to financial necessities. And under these circumstances, not only employees, but also performers, sound engineers, lighting engineers, and many other parties involved have suffered great damage.
Therefore, in order to prevent the spread of the infection, we are considering, mainly with representatives from each of the venues, to suspend the admission of spectators to the venues until the government announces the convergence.
We ask the government to compensate our business financially for a period of time starting from February 26, when the request for self-restraint was officially announced by the mayor of Tokyo, until we are allowed to operate our business.
The compensation should include facility maintenance costs, employee salaries, and event production costs (performance fees, sound and lighting). In addition, for performances that have been cancelled due to the effects of the pandemic, we will present the actual amount of loss to be subsidised.
We acknowledge that our spaces and activities pose a higher risk of mass infection than other industries, and our far most important concern is the prevention of the virus spread.
Once this compensation is promised, cultural institutions, employees, performers, and stakeholders will do everything in our capacity to contain the outbreak. Also, during the closure of the venues, by shifting to no-audience live streaming for example, we will commit to seek for ways to continue to contribute to the development of music culture.
