I’m very proud to have Melanie Scrofano as my night in shining armour!
I've been seeing/hearing some rumblings in the periphery about Wynonna Earp, and rumors of a cancellation of the show and the season that has not been filmed yet. While I haven't found any official word to confirm, deny, or otherwise, this is a good excuse for me to take a moment and lay down some praise for the show.
I will freely admit that when I first watched an episode of Wynonna Earp, I didn't instantly love it. I had been burned by the offerings of SyFy before. I was wary of the effects and camera angles. I wondered if this was yet another show donning the well-worn mantle of BtVS. I tend to be selfish with my TV time, and so, I didn't proceed to episode 2.
But a friend urged me to give it another go, to get past my misgivings and embrace the badassery. So, I did.
I have no regrets.
Wynonna Earp is a loving homage to shows I have adored in the past. It's a beautiful tableau of flawed characters and all the shades of moral gray. It's sass and adventure and some cheese and a whole lot of heartstrings all knotted up. Who knew.
Yes, the show grew on me. Drew me in and got its shards of a broken whiskey bottle lodged under my skin. I started to care about what happened to the Earp sisters (because goddamn, Scrofano and Provost-Chalkley are just pure screen magic). I raised a glass to every sly look between Nicole and Waverly. I sat on the edge of my seat wondering just where and how the Earp curse would play out.
And then of course, there is the way that the cast and crew have embraced their fans, and doled out nothing but love and support, particularly to those in the LGBTQIA community. When you have the combo of fast, witty dialogue, fierce lady heroes (who are somewhat reluctant but what the hell if there are donuts involved), poignant storylines, queer love and kisses, thrills and peril and bad decisions, gunpowder and hooch, and one of the kindest fanbases out there... well, shit. That's something worth keeping - in one's wicked little fan-heart, and on the (digital) airwaves.
I don't want to see this show go. Not yet. Not for a good long while.
So maybe, just maybe, this small whisper of love will join the building chorus of show admiration, which hopefully will reach the ears of the powers-that-be. And if we Earpers need to chip in somehow to make it happen, well then, we can roll up our sleeves and collect some nickels if we have to. Let's do what we can to keep this good wholesome show running (or at least go down in a Purgatory blaze of glory trying).
I believe in the power of the Earpers #SaveWynonna
