Damn it, Dean thinks, This is gonna take a lot of chickflick moments.

Pulled this from my bookmarks for a reread and I'm still in love with it. Love how well it's written and all the details in the plotting and how the story builds and evolves plus the boys are awesome.

I like how you've stuck to Cas saved Sam... because he did. He was actually pretty worried about Sam throughout the episode. People looking at the 'he didn't have to ask' line through shipper goggles think Cas meant 'because it's Dean', but no... it was exactly what he said right after, Sam didn't have to ask because 'Sam is alone in this' - he wanted to be there to help/support Sam (evidenced in the phone call they had) and protect him if need be... and it's exactly what ended up happening.

Cas came through  a very long way until he learned to love and respect Sam. It took him a lot of breaking what he's been taught over millennia, but he came through it and he really cares about Sam. 

Seeing him this season and in s9 caring for Sam like that warms my heart.

But wasn't it both Cas and Sam who saved Dean? Cas helped too, you know...

Cas saved Sam. Or, you can say, saved Dean from killing Sam. 

Sam saved Dean. He did the research, he did the hunt, he got captured, tortured, almost died, he didn't give up, this was the only thing he did since Dean died, he faced Dean at the bar, one handed, with only handcuffs, he was able to cuff Dean and to take him home. He did the curing ritual. 

True, he couldn't have done this without Cas, because he would have been dead for the final steps of the cure. 

So techinaclly, it was both. But the way I read it , it was mostly like that: Cas saved Sam, Sam saved Dean.
