Adam Grabowski: Meaning in Comedy

On Thursday, October 18th a comedian that performed on America’s Got Talents visited Villa Maria College. He is Adam Grabowski. A young comedian from the windy city.

Adam also performed last year at Villa. I went to both performances, and overall I’d say he did most of the same material. Honestly, it’s what I expected. He’s not the most popular and I know how hard it is to come up with the material. He still did a really good job with reacting to people and how he timed the jokes.

One thing that separates Adam from other comedians is that he genuinely wants to try and raise awareness about depression and other social problems that people have. I know it sounds kind of weird for a comedian but he gets very real about certain problems in the world. Some comedians will touch on problems in the world but Adam takes time to spread awareness. He has a hashtag he uses called #SayItAnyway. The hashtag is supposed to help people come out and talk about their problems in life. He believes the worst part is keeping all your problems inside.

At the end of the show, Adam did a question and answer portion. He started it off being very serious to try and get people to open up about problems. He said he would answer anything. I wanted to break the silence that he created and I raised my hand and started speaking as if I had a serious problem. All I wanted to know though is which Toy Story movie was his favorite. It got a laugh from the audience and broke the tension that was there. He then opened up about some personal information, from sex life, his ex-life, and dealing with depression.

While Adam would not rank in my top comedians, he certainly is going to be a memorable one for me. I don’t get to meet many of them, and for two years in a row, he’s taken the time out of his day to wait and take a photo with me. I wanted a comical photo, so I asked him to just stare at me last year. So I did the same thing this year.

Just wanted to thank Adam for touching so many people’s hearts in his act while making them smile and laugh. It’s a true gift that most people take for granted.

So happy life lead me to meet this person tonight. He has inspired me not only to own and share my story, but make it a goal to become more active in ending the stigma of mental health. I want to help those who suffer as I do. I want them to know you are not alone.
