south carolina gothic:

you see pop up farmers market shops for miles on the side of highway 17. all they have are vats of pickled okra. ur dog curls away from the smell.

the church down the street from you has service every sunday night. you never see anyone enter, but cars randomly appear and vanish through the summer heat. you hear chanting and singing after all the cars have left. the door never unlocks.

the deli downtown has wire chairs, they curl and bend with the heat, almost sighing under the shade of the massive oak trees. you try to shake the feeling of the seat leg swirling around your ankle.

you feel a crawling sensation every time you go to bed. the covers are ripped off in a fury, only to discover a mass of perfectly spaced out palmetto bugs, completely still. they move to face you and smile with rows of perfectly gleaming teeth. you don’t sleep that night.

every gas station only has a slushie machine. with one flavor. there is no cashier, or bathroom. only a constant following river of sticky sugar water. there is one crackling light overhead. there are no cups. a hole grows around your feet.
