It was 1974, outside Scamps in Croydon. The neon bathed the wet pavement in fiery orange and cool blue. There stood Leni, a Danish teacher visiting friends, whom I had met the night before. She was twenty-two and I at eighteen, seeing her smile back at me in that electric glow felt like pure magic.
