It was certainly not love at first sight. Slowly his love for her had crept up on him, until he sat beside her sickbed in a private room at St. Mungo’s, praying to a god he no longer believed in, watching the soft rise and fall of her chest. And when she croaked his name the next morning, it pounced.
I can’t believe there are only seven left. I think that’s why I’ve been putting off the Thicker Than Water updates. I’ll miss writing them. Sorry if you’d been waiting for it though.
Sometimes I get this urge when I have absolutely no free time. It’s usually when I’m halfway through the sitcom when I should be halfway through an essay and I write a joke that could really work for them and think about how much I sort of want that to be the script I’m writing. Except of course it can’t be.
As soon as I have a minute to myself, I’m going to have my midlife crisis about thirty years too early and then I’m going to rewrite Kreacher Comforts for the sake of grammatically correct punctuation and the sheer enjoyment of the bloody thing.

Suave and charming when he wants to be and often ornery and brooding when he doesn’t, John Lupin could be something of a loose canon. He is, however, generally, a logical thinker and strategic planner. These traits have given him a tendency to be over-confident which can lead to occasional recklessness.
His parents are ageing Anglican purebloods whose first-born son, also named John, died of cot death (now referred to as SIDS) after only ten days. He is given the name Quartinus as he is the fourth John Lupin, his late brother being the third. As such, they have high expectations of their surviving son (born seven years later) and John is raised in an environment of intense pressure. This leads to him developing a dark sense of humour which, in order to rebel, he hones into razor sharp wit.
At seventeen, he meets his wife, who is having some difficulty with her mother’s car. Her presence in his life causes his parents severe discomfort and so he sees her as often as possible. They date for eighteen months before they have a physical relationship and within two weeks, she falls pregnant. Forced to grow up, John is at first resentful of the child, happy to blame the baby for his own mistakes, but as his son grows, so does John’s love for him, until they are far more like brothers than father and son, making it increasingly hard for John (as the disciplinarian) to rein him in.
His Patronus is a fox - a creature known for its mischievousness and cunning. They can be both a good or a bad omen and, depending on the folklore you consult, they can bring either success or ruin.
He is killed in the summer of 1978 by a curse which hit him in 1976, intended to slow the processing power of the brain. Its effects almost mimic dementia. By the end of his life, John cannot recognise the faces of the family who provide him with constant care.
His parents meet their grandson for the first time at his funeral.

I’ve never cheated my way out before, but Thicker Than Water is going to be updated on the 25th (a Saturday). There’s a choice. “Hot” or “Cold”. (They appear alphabetically on the list, but idiosyncratically, “hot” usually comes first, so I was wondering if anyone had a preference? Or anything they wanted to see?) Also, something of a surprise I think, Where Dwell the Brave at Heart is making its comeback on Friday 24th after two years.
So in an update due on Tuesday, John is about to make his Thicker than Water debut and I'm so looking forward to it. I can't tell you how much I enjoy writing him - especially because when I plucked him out of my fanfiction and stuck him in my novel, he became rather serious and deeply troubled. John Lupin hides his pain so much better than John Barnes.
But zero angst. Even if he only appears in one of Lupin's many painful memories, it's still a happy chapter, I promise.

The next contains a carnation, preserved by his magic. It had once been a button she had hoarded despite having lost the cardigan it came from. She had not believed him when he told her he had been trained in witchcraft – not until her pearl button had blossomed in his palm. She had crossed the room, one hand on the doorknob.
“Em, please don’t be frightened.”
She jumps, clutching a hand to her mouth. His voice is clear and echoes around the room, almost as though he is beside her. Her hands are shaking, her teeth chattering. After all this time, she had assumed, had hoped, that she would forget the sound of his voice.
