Barcode scanning startup Scandit raises $80M in Series C round
- By Phil Siarri , Nuadox -
This is a quick update in regards to Scandit (which Nuadox first covered in 2018), a Zürich, Switzerland-based startup that utilizes augmented reality and computer vision frameworks with the aim to revolutionize barcode scanning. The company announced today it has completed a US $80 million Series C round, hoping to accelerate digital transformation across several industry verticals.
The announcement which was posted on the company’s official blog, mentions that the round was led by US-based venture capital firm G2VP. Other investors include Atomico, GV, Kreos, NGP Capital, Salesforce Ventures as well as Swisscom Ventures.

Some key points:
The Scandit platform combines computer vision, machine learning, barcode scanning, text recognition (OCR), object recognition and augmented reality (AR) technologies for any smart device equipped with a camera. Such enable Scandit to “blend” the physical world with digital information.
The company has so far raised US $123 million in funding (that includes the latest round).
Leadership is eager to explore other industries beyond their traditional consumer retail clients. A key sector is healthcare which also heavily uses barcodes (think patient IDs, samples and medication).
The need for social distancing amid the COVID-19 pandemic bodes well for the platform (which could make certain activities less “tactile”); though more data and use cases are probably needed at this point to make a clear determination.

Scandit raises 30 million, aims to bring AR and computer vision to mobile barcode scanning
- By Nuadox Crew -
On July 26, Switzerland-based Scandit, an enterprise technology platform for mobile computer vision, barcode scanning, and augmented reality, announced that it has raised $30 million in Series B funding led by GV, with participation from NGP Capital and existing investor Atomico, among others. Scandit has previously raised $13 million.
The new funding will enable Scandit to accelerate global expansion and further develop its mobile computer vision platform to support advanced capabilities across any camera-equipped device. The funding will propel Scandit’s long-term vision of bringing the Internet of Things to everyday objects. Scandit achieves this by harnessing smart devices and their commodity cameras as universal sensors through mobile computer vision and augmented reality (AR), leading to the seamless convergence of physical and digital worlds.

We use Cassandra in two ways: First, it holds our product database. Second, we use it to store and analyze the scans generated by the apps that integrate the Barcode Scanner SDK. We call this Scanalytics.
Scanalytics is a web-based analytics platform that lets app developers see what happens in their app: What kind of products do their users scan? Groceries, electronics, cosmetics, etc.? Where do they scan? At home? In the retail store? And so on. All that goes into Cassandra.
The Product database has 25 million records, so you could probably do it with any database. But I’d be interested to learn how data is modeled in Scanalytics.
Scandit's Scanalytics reports which product categories are scanned most often by users of your app. This provides unique insights into user behavior and helps you identify opportunities.
