Viz vs. MangaStream
This evening, I came across the story of Viz demanding MangaStream take down all of their scans of titles (Naruto, Bleach, One Piece, Hunter x Hunter, Katekyo Hitman Reborn, Claymore, D.Gray-man) that are licensed by Viz. While Viz has been staying mum, MangaStream has released a statement to their fans which states that due to the "aggressive and escalating nature" of Viz's "threats", they will be taking down the scans, but only Viz scans.
The other statement I found interesting was "This comes despite our best efforts to pursuade fans into supporting official distributors by being the only group to actively prevent an archive from forming on their website through the removal of chapters that are older than a couple weeks." So, if I am reading this correctly, because they (MangaStream) told their fans to still support Viz by going to Viz.com and by not keeping an archive of pirated scans, that everything is just fine. This boggles my mind. They are still hosting, even for a short period of time, copywrited content (a.k.a. pirated manga).
What further astounds me is the response by MangaStream fans. All you need to do is check out Viz's Facebook page to see the onslaught of hatred for Viz. There have been a few rational comments, but they are few and far between. I don't think these people ("fans") realize they are the problem with why manga is not so easy to get anymore. So many companies have been going under lately they need to support the publishers, not continue to undermine them by reading manga from these so-called "fan" sites. Many of the complaints is that Viz is too slow with their releases and they want to get the manga the same time as in Japan. If only they knew how difficult it was to get any manga just 20 or so years ago they would have no room to complain. I only see this as complete and utter selfishness.
I will continue to support Viz and other manga publishers by purchasing their titles and so should you!
