Fanfiction Writer Interview #1 - scarlettsakura

So in honour of Fanfiction Writer’s Appreciation Day, here’s the first interview! I just wanted to promote a few fanfiction writers and show a bit of the process that goes into writing. You can find @scarlettsakura ‘s Fanfiction here. If you like Kai/Hilary fanfiction, you should check her out!

How long have you been writing? Scarlettsakura: I been writing for about 10 years.

What inspired you to start writing? Scarlettsakura: I am inspired by a lot by what is around me, music, reading others writing and emotions that am feeling at the moment.

But was there a particular thing that made you start writing? A fan fiction you read or a desire to let other people read your writing? Or a book you enjoyed? Scarlettsakura: My desire started from reading other people works on FFN , I became so enthralled in how they wrote that I wanted to show my stories as well. I had developed the nerve to show and tell people my stories.

What do you think most characterises your writing? Scarlettsakura: I like to play with my character’s emotions. If am writing a character who suffered in the past I wan to do my best in describing just how to the readers and myself.

What are your favourite and least favourite tropes? Scarlettsakura: My favorite troupe if am understanding the question right would have to be when a new stranger arrives in town, there’s a lot that you can do with that beginning. They could be good, bad , antihero etc.

My least favorite is when cheapens their character. If am reading something and the heroine suddenly becomes a mindless wanton servant to her male counterpart am not going to like that at all.

What is your method for starting a story? Scarlettsakura: I start but writing down a rough idea on paper along with what genres I think it would include.

Ex: Idea girl runs from home – drama,romance ,friendship

Then I research and get ideas on plots within the story, she running from her home because she saw a murder So I look up how a murder scene would look like, how a witness would deal with the emotional impact of seeing that happen.

I get lots of information from Tumblr, Pinterest and website for this. I like to put a face to my character and will spend time looking through website for someone who matches what I have in mind.

Writing can be a pretty solitary hobby, how do you keep your motivation? Scarlettsakura: I re-read my favorite books, fanfics or simply get up walk around till I have a new thought or inspiration.

When you’re not writing, what other hobbies do you have and do you feel they help your writing? Scarlettsakura: I have a love for crafting that includes sewing, reading, crocheting, cooking. I often find myself coming up with ides when am doing something else.

Do you find that when you put a story to the back of your mind to work on a craft, that the problem you had with a plot will work itself out? Scarlettsakura: Yes I often find that if am having a issue with writing that stepping away from it and doing something completely different can help me break through issues that am having.

What is your weakest trait with writing? Scarlettsakura: My weakness are my spelling, grammar and punctuation.

How do you work on fixing your weakness? Do you have an editor or do you look up writing blogs for help? I have followed a lot of writing blogs both on Tumblr and Pinterest. I also joined a forum called the Artist zone where people meet up and talk about different types of writing and seek advice from each other. I also use a few different editing websites if am not in contact with someone who edits from FFN or other social networking.

What is your strongest? Scarlettsakura: I can be very descriptive sometimes and my friends have said that I describe things as if am writing for novel.

If you had to give any advice to new writers, what would it be? Scarlettsakura: Buy notebooks lots of them, buy one with designs, buy ones from the local dollar store. You may think that you can do everything on a laptop or online but you won’t, write down anything and everything you have a thought of. Don’t care if you write something that sounds terrible, write good, write bad, write down right terrible. It all serves a purpose in the end.

What was the best piece of advice you ever got? Scarlettsakura: Don’t be afraid to write badly.

Following that, what technical aspect of writing have you learned that you would impart on others? Scarlettsakura: Learn the rules of writing, understand commas, grammar and tips to improve yourself in writing.

Have you noticed anything changing in terms of fan fiction over your years writing? Scarlettsakura: I notice a great deal of both positive and negative changes. People have grown to see Fan-fiction as a form of authorship it not just fanfiction it’s becoming a form of in it’s self. People look up to those who post this fan-fiction as much as they do J.K Rowling or Stephen King.

The negative aspect is that people or the fandom put pressure for these authors to continue their works , demanding that they ( the readers) be satisfied with updates. Some have driven some writers to quit with excessive emails or messaging.

Do you feel people are much more entitled when it comes to fan fiction? Like you owe them your fanfiction? If so, how does that make you feel?Scarlettsakura: I think people are always going to believe that they are always in the right. Now when it comes down entitlement I don’t believe that readers are allowed to bombard writers with endless emails to update and finish their stores.

While I can see from both the reader and writer standpoint, if I find a fanfic that I really like but then I see that the writer hasn’t update am going to feel selfish and want to beg them to continue.

As a writer though I know how stressful it can be to write out even one chapter: my readers are always in the forefront of my mind but as we all know life can interfere and that can sometimes cause writer to stop writing.

I really feel that readers remember and take into consideration, if you find a story instead of emailing or leaving a comment for the writer to hurry up, stop go at it with a different approach. Say how you liked the story, give encouragement to them and positive vibes.

What kind of things influence you when writing?

Scarlettsakura: Music can greatly influence my writing I love working to a soundtrack that I made for a story or just listening to my favorite album. I can often find myself writing more than just writing in silence.

Music seems to be a big influence for a lot of writers, do you have any favourite songs that you would suggest for others to try? Scarlettsakura: Some of my biggest influence in music have been a group called Two Steps from Hell, they do a lot of the music for Hollywood type films. They have music that range from instrumental battle scene to softer ballad music.

Though I often will listen to anything that I declare the flavor of the week , there are time when I will listen to K Pop and then switch to Alternative or even country. Everyone has a type of music that inspires them.

What is the favourite fan fiction you’ve written? And why? Scarlettsakura: My favorite so far has to be between my Fairy Tail fanfiction and one unpublished Beyblade fanfiction that am currently writing.

I felt my Fairy Tail was made at a one time when I was coming into my writing style as a young adult my other works showed how I used to write as little thing back in 2006.

My unpublished Beyblade fic really shows the accumulation of my matured style, am using all that I have learn to give my readers a good read.

What do you read in your spare time? Do you read? Do you find reading helps you as a writer? Scarlettsakura: I am a big reader and will read anything that I find interesting, that can include romance, murder, thriller, mysteries, sci-fi. I find reading helps a great deal, you find out what you do like as you read and want you don’t like in writing.

I found that I absolutely do not like romance where someone is forced to give up all their secrets and bare their soul to their romantic interest while that same lover tells them absolutely nothing and says that they don’t have to tell their love anything

What are some ways you promote your work? How have these helped you get your writing noticed? I believe in word of mouth but I have joined many fan-groups on trumblr and writing forums. When I update I generally post there and see if they enjoy.

I loved reading Mystic-waters Untouchable & Unbreakable series on FFN for Beyblade. There’s also one called Killer Camp a really dark horror flick style Beyblade fiction
