his loyalty was unquestionable, really. the only person she knew who would never betray her, that she could trust with her plans. sure, the secrets he kept from her were frustrating and she really did wish he would give her the same level of trust she gave him, but edelgard always knew that he wished for the best for her. 

and so when hubert spoke those words, head bowed low in respect, she knew he spoke the truth.

“i don’t believe i could ever thank you enough, you know.” her smile was as soft as she could manage, with the blood on her hands. “without you, i wonder if i could’ve made it this far.” perhaps, but it would’ve been far more difficult without someone to lean on. a single hand reached out to press against his cheek in what she hoped was a comforting motion. “thank you, hubert.”

edelgard prided herself on being stronger than the average woman her age. after all, she had survived so much in her twenty-four years — an insurrection and temporary exile from her home, being experimented on, having to bear two crests, starting a war against a powerful church. but still, her heart skipped a beat at the words her loyal retainer spoke. romance was hardly hubert’s strong suit, and she knew that he’d brush it off as him saying what he saw as facts, but the fact remained that it warmed her to hear him say it.

and so, she raised a hand to gently press gloved fingers against his visible cheek. “thank you, hubert. i truly do not know what i would do without you, you know that right?” a soft smile, the kind the emperor could only give to him, pulled at her lips, and she allowed her eyes to close. trusting him to keep her safe, as he always did. yes, she was safe here, in this moment in between the battles both fought that covered their hands with blood.

An ever-so-consistent critique from Hubert. Modest was one of the concepts Linhardt tried to adapt to his personality. The title of a noble and the concept of nobility was always foolish to him. Humans were all the same, the only difference was crest inheritance. The ‘playing coy’ aspect of his personality wasn’t really meant to attract anyone or trick anyone. Linhardt liked being vague about his information as well. Shouting about your discoveries and other research-based ideas and discovering that they would be wrong was quite.... embarassing. Especially when he prided himself on his intelligence. “I would say it works, but sadly it seems that you’re the only one that is attracted to me rather than the opposite.”

Linhardt crossed his arms, with his fingers on his chin before smirking. The idea was entertaining at least, and it was good enough material just to tease the other. “Don’t tell me that you enjoy my coyness, Hubert! Although, I wouldn’t call it ‘coy’, it’s just more of a way to make others leave me alone.”

“ Oh come now, Hubert. ” Linhardt sighs, shaking his head-- and though he’s usually exasperated, the tone of his voice and the accusation in his eyes make it a rare show of true aggravation.  “ Your owl attacked mine.  They took a letter intended for my father.  Please return it. ”
