Schistura carbonaria

It is found in central Vietnam in some coastal drainage systems, from the Ve River to the Qang Tri River, and the River Xe Kong, in the Xe Kong its range may extend into Laos. It can be found in medium-sized rivers and streams which have a strong current over a substrate of rocks and gravel.

When I had a look at my big aquarium yesterday, I noted that two of the Schistura’s were much darker than I have ever seen them. Looking closer I realised they were engaged in in a fierce fight. They kept going at each other for a good 15 minutes, disregarding the fact that I rigged a light to be able to take some pictures of them. I’ve kept them for six years, and never seen anything like it. Like all of my other fish I’ve caught them in Phang Nga, southwestern Thailand.

Schistura spilota

A stone loach from the tributaries of the upper Ping River in Thailand. Inhabits riffles and flowing stretches of clear, well-oxygenated streams around watersheds and headwaters. These are usually shaded by forest cover.
