🖋📖REVIEW: . I received a copy of this book from @scholastic_au in exchange for my honest review. . Hold Back the Tide follows the protagonist Alva Douglas as she works to uncover a long held mystery surrounding her village. . I only read one line of the blurb before jumping into this read: . “Here are the rules of living with a murderer…” . That sold me instantly. I was expecting an atmospheric, moody, YA thriller set in the mountains. . Overall, I think the writing style was fantastic, I devoured this book in one sitting. I just wish that the entire book was as strong as the first chapter. I would recommend this book to YA readers that are looking for something more on the scary side. . ⭐⭐💫 . 🖋📖 REVIEW: I received a finished copy of this book from @scholastic_au in exchange for my honest review. . The book begins during the battle between Shan Yu, The Huns and Captain Shang’s regiment, as in the movie Mulan (aka Ping) redirects the last rocket so that it hits a cliff and stops the Hun from attacking. However, in this book, instead of Mulan herself being injured, Captain Shang is mortally injured. Mulan must travel to the underworld in order to save the Captain’s life. . Overall I found this to be one of the more intriguing Disney reimaginings in this Twisted Tale series, I enjoyed the personality of the storytelling that Elizabeth Lim has intertwined throughout this book. Although I do think it could have been a little bit shorter, I did really enjoy reading about Mulan going through the trials in the Diyu. 🖋📖REVIEW: I received a finished copy of this book from @scholastic_au in exchange for my honest review. . Snugglepot and Cuddlepie were quintessential characters from both my own childhood and my parents’ childhood. I suppose even my Grandparents grew up with the adventurous little gum nuts. . If you aren’t from Australia, their stories might not be known to you at all, but these precious gum nuts encouraged me to always be kind to nature. I was certain that the trees were filled with fairies and all-sorts. . Snugglepot and Cuddlepie are a gum nut brothers that one day decide to sneak out of their home and go on an adventure to see an infamous human in person. Along the way they are pulled into many different directions, meeting life-long friends and enemies. . This new bind-up of Snugglepot and Cuddlepie’s adventures is filled with the wonderful illustrations that always accompanies May Gibb’s work. 🖋📖 REVIEW: . I received a finished copy of this book from @scholastic_au in exchange for my honest review. . The Ballad of Songbirds and Snakes is set around the 10th annual Hunger Games. We follow the villain of the Hunger Games trilogy, President Snow, who is a mentor for a tribute from District 12. . Overall, it was fun to be back in the world of The Hunger Games, I would have preferred to spend more time reading about the war between the districts and the Capitol and the development of the games. I think that this prequel was not a necessary addition to the series, but a fun dive into the history of Panem for big fans of the series. ⭐⭐⭐ . 📖REVIEW: . I was lucky enough to receive a copy of Unpregnant from @scholastic_au for review. . Trigger Warning: Abortion . . . . This follows seventeen-year-old Veronica Clarke who is grappling with an unexpected pregnancy and the decision to go through with an abortion. There is a tonne of obstacles that she has to overcome in order to get to the abortion clinic located over 900 miles away from her town. . This book had both awesome moments and not-so-great moments, I think it has merit and is the kind of story I wish was accessible to me as a younger woman in high school. Teenagers often only have sex-ed to work with when dealing with their sexual health and sexual experiences, so having a book about a teenage girl that explores themes that adults often avoid when talking to teenagers would have been wonderful. . This is the only aspect of the book that made me think it wasn't going to be a favourite for the year was that the plot took a turn about halfway through that made me question all the validity up until that point. I really had to suspend disbelief for a minute in order to be able to continue the book. After a while, I was able to forget about that and jump back into the meat and veg of the story again. . I was rooting for Veronica, I genuinely enjoyed the connections she made and cheered when certain ass holes got served some ice-cold karma. I do think that the real underlying plot of this story could have been delivered in a less campy, over-the-top manner, some of the outrageous plot points took away from the real discussion in my opinion. But I did really enjoy this book, I think it's important to have YA literature that discusses topics of teen pregnancy in a way that doesn't show abortion as something negative. . I rated this 3.5 stars. . 📖REVIEW: . I received a copy of Maleficent Mistress of Evil from @scholastic_au for review. . This book tells the story of the events that took place in the Disney film of the same name. It was a great experience to read it as a story, especially since I also watched the movie while reading. . As far as Disney fairy tales go, this sequel (and Maleficent in general) is particularly interesting as it humanises the characters in such a way that Sleeping Beauty did not. . 📖REVIEW: . I received a copy of Poor Unfortunate Soul from @scholastic_au for review. . Ursula has always been my favourite Disney villain, I felt like she was misunderstood, and a deeper dive into her character is something I've always dreamt of but never thought that I'd get. As usual, I absolutely loved how the author intertwines mythology throughout her work. . There are some great themes in this book, that I think would be great to explore with young readers in your life. Ursula for one is incredibly empowered and finds herself most comfortable in her natural state, despite what others may think. . For me personally, getting to read another side to Ursula, an alternative backstory, was EXACTLY what I was hoping for. Yes, the book felt a little stuck in the mud with its plot and we did spend a lot of time following other characters as well. But that didn't make it a bad book, just a bit slower than I would have liked. . If you are a Disney fan, and you love Ursula as much as I do, I highly recommend picking this up. It was so much fun to read. .
