The state Board of Education will finalize a point scale this morning that will be used to assign letter grades to public schools.
The A-F grading scale has come under fire from some local school leaders who say the measure - passed by the General Assembly earlier this year - doesn't fully reflect a school's progress or challenges. Advocates have said the letter grades provide an easy-to-understand measurement of how well or poorly schools perform. The grading system is slated to debut in October 2014.
Among the many agenda items at its monthly meeting, the board also plans to finalize an agreement with Norfolk Public Schools regarding Lindenwod Elementary School, which has been denied accreditation for the 2013-14 school year. Lindenwood has been identified as a persistently low-performing school, even after receiving more than $1.7 million in federal funds over three years to help improve. The school must implement a board-approved corrective action plan.
The board will meet at 9 a.m. today in the Jefferson Conference Room on the 22nd floor of the Monroe Building, 101 N. 14th St., Richmond.
