Tamil Nadu Schools to Reopen on June 2: New Guidelines Emphasize Discipline, Mental Well-Being, and Parental Involvement
As the summer break draws to an end, the Tamil Nadu School Education Department has announced that all schools across the state will reopen on June 2, 2025. Alongside this reopening, the department has introduced a series of comprehensive guidelines aimed at promoting student well-being, discipline, and academic engagement in the upcoming academic year.
Key Highlights of the New Guidelines
🔹 Physical Education Reforms
One of the notable updates includes a renewed focus on Physical Education (PE). PE teachers are now required to report 30 minutes earlier than regular school hours to oversee attendance, discipline, and uniform compliance.
Each class will now have two PE periods per week, and participation is mandatory for all students. Additionally, schools must organize weekly group exercise sessions post-school hours, categorized by class groups:
🔹 Structured Morning Assemblies
Every school is mandated to conduct a daily morning assembly, led by the Headmaster and Assistant Headmaster, with compulsory student attendance.
On Tuesdays, these assemblies must feature anti-drug awareness programs. Activities can include:
Thirukkural-based storytelling
🔹 Breakfast Scheme and Reading Time
The Chief Minister’s Breakfast Scheme must be implemented efficiently and served on time with a focus on quality.
After lunch, during the fifth academic period, teachers must allot 20 minutes for reading, where students can engage with:
🔹 Weekly Moral and Library Education
To nurture students’ mental and emotional health, one weekly moral education period will be introduced and handled by the class teacher. Another period is dedicated to library activities, where students are expected to read books and make notes on their insights and learnings. Teachers must also ensure that the books provided under the Integrated School Education Programme are effectively utilized.
🔹 Stronger Parent-Teacher Engagement
School Management Committee (SMC) meetings are to be conducted regularly. Prior to each SMC meeting, class-wise parent meetings must take place.
These meetings will cover:
Student attendance and academic performance
Physical and mental health assessments
Co-curricular and extracurricular participation
Home-based learning support expectations
Updates on school infrastructure and SMC-led initiatives
Implementation and Monitoring
To ensure consistent and effective implementation, Principal Education Officers and District Primary Education Officers have been instructed to circulate these guidelines to all school heads and obtain formal acknowledgements.
The new academic year in Tamil Nadu begins with a strong emphasis on discipline, health, mental well-being, and parental involvement. These holistic guidelines aim not only to enhance learning outcomes but also to build a more responsible and engaged student community.
