hey guys. this is going to be a fairly long post, so this is your warning to scroll! so, lately i've been reading a lot of posts about how lots of stuff that we learn in school doesn't help us in the long run, and i completely agree. my school offers electives such as food fashion family, personal finance, and other helpful subjects. i'm taking personal finance this semester. now, i'm in high school. i don't know much about college courses but i do know that my high school basically teaches all the typical high school courses. now, i know that most schools, including mine, offer psych, but it's not enough to help us become more aware of our mental health. it's hard for me to share this, but i currently struggle with severe anxiety, severe depression (i'm 2 months clean of self harm!!), and a recent relapse of anorexia nervosa. i am positive that i would know how to deal with this or possibly not even developed one or more of these had i been informed at an earlier age. my parents were not required to, and did not tell me about how to keep my mental health in check, nor was i informed by my school. personally, if a mental health class, club, meeting, or assembly was arranged, i would be delighted. it's so important for kids to learn about mental illnesses and what to do about their own. also, do i know how to pay taxes? bills? buy a house? no. do i need these skills to function well later in life? yes. should schools teach this? yes. enough said. i'm a firm believer of how important and significant education is and i really, really love school and learning. however i think that it's very important for kids to know how to function in society.
